You will never make the world a better place in corporate America, ever.
I’m struggling a bit with the same but I actually love consulting- minus the hrs and the politics... very draining and not sustainable
I agree with OP but also that it’s likely the same with any large for-profit at the top of the economic food chain. I’ve been considering a move to a smaller company or non-profit but I would miss the paycheck. So I’m a soulless mercenary for the time being. I tend to enjoy the people I’ve worked with in consulting and focus on appreciating those relationships but I hate the enterprise itself and most of the work.
Are you working for a paycheck or do you want to make the world a better place? If the latter go do non profit work. If the former, why bother about the good that you aren't doing?
Yes.
Yup, that’s the conclusion I’m having to face. I fell for the dream they sell which was pretty naive of me. The reality is money and morals just don’t go together. I have a choice to make.
OP, You will probably find no shelter in non-profits from greed, conflicts of interest, and serving purposes other than helping human beings.
I agree. I don’t believe in extremes but I think it’s reasonable to assume that there would be more people who actually want to help people in a non profit that aims to help people compared to a consulting firm.
How have any of you found bright spots in this work and the people you work with? Also, are there any consulting firms with a different culture that genuinely values integrity and people? I’m really hoping I’m just looking at it from the wrong perspective or have just had bad luck with the teams I’ve encountered.
Good point! I was considering working for a small company since they’re more likely to have a more clear culture that the majority buys into. But I do wonder what the other pitfalls are. Because, as you said, every company has some pitfalls. I think what I need to do is choose which pitfalls are worth it for me.
