Considering leaving hectic agency to an in house creative team at a relatively unknown tech startup. I’ll get a significant raise and a better work environment but still on the fence. Thoughts?

I did the same thing and it was the best thing ever. Gave me a break from the crazy ad life and expanded my skill set. I’m now back at a big agency but now have my foot in the door for when this industry fully crumbles.

Forget that it’s a startup. Will the work you are doing there be cool? Will you walk away with book pieces? If so, definitely go for it. If not, you may want to consider if going in-house and not getting any good work out if it could stall your career a bit when you want to jump back into an agency

My experience was slightly different. The whole company had no idea how advertising works, so I found myself wearing producer, PM and strategy hats, as well as fulfilling my creative obligations. The final straw came when the CEO dictated that the music for the TV spot had to be created by her bum husband. Everyone protested. She refused to budge and clearly told her husband about the opposition. When it came to recording the V/O, we were once again ordered to use his "studio". It took all of about 20 minutes for him to launch into an abusive tirade at the talent - a young lady in her teens. At this point, I ushered everyone out of the studio and had a "quiet word" with him myself. The entire crew quit on the spot, as did I. For the record, this was not a struggling startup, but rather a company with large financial backing from big name investors.

@ACD1 just the answer I was looking for

@ECD1 that’s....definitely not ideal. From what I’ve seen while interviewing they have creative leadership from various agency/studio backgrounds, have a couple other talented designers/art directors on staff and aren’t interested in TV spots as much as OOH & digital experiences. The team is separate from HQ as well which might help avoid issues with the CEO dictating creative. Overall I’m feeling positive about it. I can’t deal with my toxic agency environment anymore and need something different.

@ACD1 - can I ask what you think are the potential expanded skill sets for creatives (esp ADs?) Curious about “the other side” :)

Humble brag much?

I’m a copywriter so I can’t really speak to the skills for an AD but I don’t think they are necessarily position based. It was a tech startup so I got to work with some of the best engineers in the game. Engineers who now work at Spotify, google, apple, etc. Some of the best in-house places that I now have in’s at. I learned a lot about building apps. The backend, the portals, the processes. I also got to see first hand the motivations behind client asks bc I kind of was the client. I presented my work to the marketing team. It helps to understand them from the inside out. Don’t get me wrong, I still hate clients but understanding them more makes it easier to bite the bullet and add more terrible product shit to copy. Also, we always say advertising is such a small world, well so is the startup community. I now freelance consistently through the connections I’ve made and it’s all remote. The day I quit full time to freelance, I’m going to try and work those angles rather than having to go into agencies. If my startup hadn’t become so successful and therefore more corporate, I probably never would have quit. You might not build your book with the sexiest work but as long as you keep your connections to agency folk there’s no reason you can’t go back and forth. Good luck!

Hi friends, I’m in a bit of a dilemma, and was hoping for some feedback here. I am a Canadian citizen, and have been living and working in the US since 2017 on an L1A visa. I decided to pursue a GC about a year ago, and my company approved the process. Our immigration attorneys were far from helpful, and my case didn’t get very far. Fast forward a year, our company has been acquired, and my GC case has now been transferred to a new legal team. The process is basically restarting from scratch.
