Considering making a switch from practicing as a big law corporate senior associate (7th year) to a (non-practicing) practice manager role at another big law firm, primarily for lifestyle change. Other than the pay cut, anyone have insights or made this switch? Thoughts on whether it would difficult to transition back to practice (either in-house or big law) a few years from now if I want to practice again? Would my only exit opps. be to to similar practice management roles at other firms?

My guess is that it will be hard to transaction back

What obstacles do you see to transitioning back - i.e., firms won’t have an appetite for someone who took a break from practicing? Something else?

I’m the same year as you and considered this move. My understanding is that it would be very difficult to transition back to practicing. I decided to go in house for the time being because I’m not ready to give up practicing law altogether, and I figure those practice management roles may still be an option down the road, but a practicing role in house or at a firm may not be once I (potentially) demonstrate on my resume that I’m not interested in practicing law anymore.

Same year as you and considering the same switch. I’d be staying at my own firm though so think the barrier to re-entry wouldn’t be as high. Is it possible to do this role at your current firm?
