I would say start off in Madrid over Barcelona if you have to choose, less touristy and equally pretty + more cultural activities. Day trips to Toledo and Segovia are a must.
You can then do a few things things:
-If you like food, make your way North to the Basque region, passing by La Rioja (wine region). In the Basque region, San Sebastian is a must-see and the gastronomic capital of Spain (I am biased because this is my hometown 😂).
-Or head South and do Granada, Sevilla and Córdoba. They are beautiful.
Depending on the time of year I also recommend Mallorca, an absolute gem of an island.
Looking to party? Barcelona.
Want to learn about government/history/art? Madrid.
Huge historic castle + free tapas + very walkable city + near outdoor activities like hiking, etc? Granada.
Bull fighting or GoT fan? Seville.
Beach town/high end/yachts + lots of brits? Marbella.
Seville. Also Sagrada Familia in Barcelona
I third sevilla. Done a lot of traveling and maybe my favorite city. Do a food tour and a flamenco show. Def get tickets and go inside segrada familia.
San Sebastián if you guys are foodies
💯💯💯💯
How many days do you have? Some cities are pretty far from each other so you do need to plan ahead of time.
We had about a week in Spain for our honeymoon. We spent 3 nights in Barcelona staying in La Rambla/Gothic area, full day trip in Girona (Game of Thrones), and 3 nights in Madrid. We kept it more of a city/foodie tour since we were doing the relaxing/beach leg of our honeymoon in Greece. Wanted to squeeze in Valencia but it was a little too much in the week. Next time we’d do more of the beachy side of Spain.
Also, Spain has the top restaurants in the world (so many Michelin starred restaurants). Book them now!
This photo was from Girona, an easy train ride from Barcelona.
We didn’t realize that restaurant was there until we arrived in Spain and that time it was too late! We actually went to Girona after the flower festival and most restaurants were closed unfortunately. https://barcelonalowdown.com/girona-flower-festival/
Adding to above list: check out Valencia’s Calatrava’s opera house and city of arts....
It is all awesome, but I have a very special place in my heart for Sevilla. For an 11-12 day trip, I would do Madrid, Sevilla and Barcelona. A day trip to Toledo from Madrid is pretty cool too. High speed trains between the cities is efficient. Better than flying.
A bonus for Seville if you are a Game of Thrones fan. They filmed the Dorne scenes at El Alcazar in Sevilla.
Ibiza 🕺 💃
Mallorca > Ibiza
Valencia is my favorite city in Spain!
Bilbao & San Sebastián for the food and the Guggenheim!
Cadiz is amazing (southern coastal town). I also really enjoyed Granada - the Alhambra is definitely a must see.
I loved Barcelona
Valencia for city/sightseeing/culture and take a super cheap and short flight into Palma on Mallorca for lux/relaxation/beach vibes for a few days
Also add Bilbao to the list for culture and food.
I would also caution you if you don’t live in Europe about booking things. If you live in North America (US or Canada) be careful. We had to cancel our European honeymoon to France, Italy and basically have indefinitely postponed due to travel restrictions!
Alicante is amazing for the beaches and a really cool city. Lived there for a summer and really enjoyed it. I’d definitely recommend seeing Barcelona and Valencia as well. I had some of the best food I’ve ever had in Valencia.
Where in Alicante would you recommend staying? What do you think of Benidorm?
Seville, Granada, and there’s lots of good stops between the two like Cadiz and Malaga. San Sebastián and Valencia are great too. From seville you can bus/train to “end of the world” Portugal (near Lagos). Also cheap flights to Canary Islands from seville and you can even ferry to Morocco (Idk why you would lol). Toledo outside of Madrid. I’d skip barcelona personally but that’s just me
Andalusia is the best 😭
Seville and Barcellona
Tarragona it's about an hour outside of Barcelona. Beautiful small town. Was the first Roman settlement in the peninsula, so has roman ruins, great beach, plenty to do for a couple of days. I've been there a few times and precovid did Santa Tecla in the fall and by far one of the best cultural experiences/emergent I've had.
Kapital😎
Yeah it was last time I visited in 2018... I’m not sure if it’s currently opened due to COVID though
