Do we want the student to master these ideas or not? a free 50% is notmastering anything. Giving a student a 50% is NOT going to fix the elephant in the room. We need help from the parents to change their views on education. If they would simply tell them it's important and why this would be a tremendous start. Oh, and outlaw all Math Apps as well...
Ha Ha! I agree with you. I feel like we have given the kids basically two years of a "Pass, " in their classes. When do we start to raise the bar? I have kids who just don't want to do the work, and think they will pass. They won't.

Actually, if the 50% threshold was applied to teachers, you could technically show up, do nothing at all, bum around the lounge or library all day, turn in blank forms for IPLPs, 504s, IEPs, etc, and still expect half your paycheck.
That’s not a bad idea. Maybe you could couple it with a second job as a online teacher where you do nothing and pick up the other half of your paycheck from that. Someone should try this and report back!

Really, any grading scheme can be gamed. My issue with the 50%-for-nothing approach is that it seems designed to be gamed, greasing through kids who haven't done nearly enough to earn a passing grade.
Let it go. Focus on what you can control.
This policy was meant to motivate students that they could still pass with some effort; however, I believe that while the thinking was noble, it hasn’t motivated most students who fail.
If you want to compare it to the work world think about it more as if instead of immediately firing you for forgetting to turn in your individual growth plan on time, the fact that you are a good teacher that consistently plans and delivers quality lessons is given more weight and you’re just given a warning instead…
