Consistently billing 190-200 hours per month but being told it's not enough. Firm average is about 165 but my group expects more of us. Anyone have tips for billing more/more efficiently? 200 feels like a struggle- not sure how people hit 250+. 2nd year lit associate if that helps!

Agree with A1. I would explore a lateral move.

200 lit hours a month is a lot, especially if it’s every month. That’s 2400 a year. What lit subgroup are you in?

like

Biggest tip is: bill the full amount of time spent. Don’t cut your own billing, the partner can do that. Sometime I felt I’d take too long researching or drafting and shave some of my own time off, and that was stupid.

Just don't turn down work. Ever.

190 x 12 is 2280. 200 x 12 is 2400. Both are way over most firms requirements. I would be looking for a firm that doesn’t think either of those is a low number. Not all biglaw is like this.

It’s not like this everywhere, especially in lit. Explore options if you can. This is not great

This is insane. Can’t believe firms like that exist.

Midlevel M&A just lateraled to my V10 firm and have been doing 75-ish billable hrs per week for the past three weeks. I’m exhausted from sleeping 4-5hr per night. So, I'm happy at my current job and have been there about 18 months. Our pay is probably 15% below market (AmLaw 100) but so are our billable requirements. An interview for another firm kind of fell into my lap, and I'm debating whether to take it just for the sake of seeing what market really is. Is there something shady about interviewing somewhere you're not totally committed to accepting an offer from?

Opinions welcomed:

V5 Legal Assistant here (2 years in industry, started at current firm in late April). I’m on pace for 2700 billable hours / year. To boot, that rate is going up because of all of the 65+ hour weeks lately, and the first month being billed around 40.

I was just told that I may not qualify for any bonuses because I haven’t been here for 1 year.

Is this normal? Am I crazy for thinking that I should be getting a *significant* bonus for all of the crazy hours and deadlines?

How would you ask to transfer to another office within your firm?

I lateraled from one firm in city A to another firm city B. During the interview process, I made a big deal about how I badly I wanted to be in B, despite only being barred in A. They hired me, paid for my bar courses, the works.

Now I find myself in a position where I need to leave B due to personal issues. Thinking of going to DCso I can just waive in.

It's been less than a year since I've joined; is it too soon to ask this?

If you received a bar stipend and left before the end of your first year, did your firm treat the bar stipend amount like a clawback? If so, was it immediately due? Curious to see how other firms handle this
