For the last four weeks or so of WFH I’ve been making it to my desk around 7:30/8am and working basically without a break—lunch at desk- but cannot maintain momentum past like 6:30/7:30pm. Most of the day is billable work, but I cannot bring myself to finish outstanding assignments after 8pm, but then feel so guilty when I’m not working past that time. Am I burnout or fucked up? (Also I hate this gig & am not in it for the long haul, just hate not turning things quickly)
What is a reasonable expectation for number of documents to review per week for a junior associate? Managing a doc review with a lot of documents to go through and need to assign some batches out to a few junior associates. We’re at a firm where associates on average bill 2400 per year (just mentioning that for a general idea of workload expectations that our associates are well aware of). So we generally have an expectation that associates will grind it out but I also want to be (cont’d)
Im a second yr at a firm with a "flexible vacation policy" how many days would be acceptable to take off? I have never taken a day off and im on track to bill over 2200 hours (1900 requirement).
I need help with what my next career move should be! I’m a 3rd year complex lit associate at a V50 firm moving to a Midwest city with limited biglaw options. I’m very interested in white collar and employment law, but they’re very different with different career trajectories. I have more experience in white collar but have always been interested in employment. I don’t want to lose the complex cases big law offers — will I even get those kinds of cases at a firm like Littler? (More below)
Does anyone have a certified fraud examiner (CFE) certification? How helpful is it for investigations work?
How does your firm treat COVID leave? My firm is giving me credit for time off but I was out for nearly 10 days. (the worst version of covid I have ever experienced). I feel uneasy about my November hours as having covid in the middle of the month and the holiday really threw off my productivity and workload. I know it will likely all be fine but need some words of wisdom.
Anyone have any insight into Dechert’s finance practice group? Hours, personalities, etc. Thanks in advance!
Mid-level recently lateraled to V30 from a regional firm. My last 3 weeks are 225 billed hours with another 70+ coming this week. I have essentially zero support and am responsible for every item in the transaction (nuanced M&A deal). Please tell me this isn’t the typical pace/expectation I signed up for over a typical year.
I interviewed for an associate position at a mid size firm. I really liked them, but they offered the position to someone else, only giving me an answer on the status of my candidacy after that person accepted.
Is it wrong to assume that they hadn’t rejected me sooner in case others didn’t accept? If so, how can I let the firm know I’d like to be considered for future openings? I used a recruiter, should I have her tell them? Should I contact the interviewers directly?
Looking to lateral into a fully remote ECVC role to have more flexibility to move closer to family and to hopefully have a better work life balance. However, I was told by my recruiter that Cooley, Gunderson, and Goodwin said they’re not offering remote roles in ECVC at this time. For some context, I’m class of 2019 coming from a V10 with M&A and CapM experience. Anyone hearing or seeing similar things? Curious if fully remote is no longer offered as much or if the ECVC market has slowed.
Is there such a thing as a fifth year lit associate at a V10 switching to corporate within the V100? Obviously rare but curious if anyone has seen it.
Mid level corporate associate. Wife just accepted a job in Atlanta and I’m looking to lateral to a firm with a strong Atlanta presence. Any suggestions? Which firms have matched / plan to match DPW / Cravath?
Current federal clerk, hoping to go to big law when my term is up. During law school I only worked in the public sector, so I am less familiar with how big firms work & looking for some advice. How do you end up in a particular practice area (I am most interested in antitrust / commercial litigation)? What are big things you look for to determine if a firm will be a good fit? How negotiable are salaries when starting salaries / clerkship bonus rates are published online?
Crosspost- tips for talking to SO about support through biglaw? Currently a third year and planned to leave by now but find myself enjoying it more and wanting to stay longer and maybe make a run for partner if I still feel this way and am as well liked in a few years. Struggling with how to bring this up to my SO and ask for more of his support bc I know my job is very hard on him and requires more of his flexibility/understanding and contribution to the household stuff than other jobs would.
If you’re succeeding on all the right metrics (i.e., leadership loves you, clients love you, you’re participating on pitches, you’ve brought in clients, and you’re set up to inherit a book of business), but you’re still not super into it, being promoted to income partner won’t change things, right? Worth sticking out to see or jumping to go in house at a pre-IPO, late stage startup you find super exciting and interesting?
My last day at the firm is this week. I’m lateraling to another firm. Is there anything you wish you had done during your last few days at the firm before lateraling?
