Construction PM with 7 yrs in Project and Risk Management working in large scale capital projects ($2M to $100M).

I have a Masters and Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a Financial management certification program (8 months-online) from Cornell University.

Any advice to Pivot my career to below??

BCG - operations (capital projects mgt.)
Bain - Infrastructure & Building Products
McK- Capital Excellence grp.
PWC - Capital Program Excellence
Deloitte - Capital Proj. & infrastructure

Thanks!

For McK look up OEP (our operations practice development program); the capital excellence group is part of that. Potentially reach out to some people who are on that program. They also do some info events specifically for that program too.

However as a general note, even people who come in to the firm in that area still do generalist work and have to undergo the same recruiting process as a generalist (cases and PEI). The only difference is you’re tagged to a practice so can help with navigating the firm as you have a bit of a home. So essentially, any tips to get into mck are applicable here. Have a search on the bowl or Google as there’s plenty of great resources to support you.

Project management experience is good, however, we do minimal PMO and are very content focused so try not to overindex on project management skills. Try and show how you’re able to do more than just process. Also you will likely come in at Associate level, potentially even junior associate depending on the office. You will not come in as an engagement manager (95% sure). Make sure you’re okay with that.

Thanks a ton!

Another thought could be in insurance. Lots of reinsurance transaction teams in infrastructure, as well as direct underwriting. Could be a way to transition also. SwissRe, MunichRe, RGA, etc are the big reinsurers.

Appreciate the input. Will look into it.

Litigation consulting for capital projects is a good one too.

like

Not that I have seen. I saw the Energy practice was looking for someone w 10+yrs of project controls experience plus tech transformation experience for one of their big accounts. I thought the PC part was not to much of a stretch, but having someone that's done enterprise level tech transformation makes it really specific.

like

I just joined one of the groups mentioned above and I also have a Bachelors in CE, no masters, no MBA. I started in a small construction consulting firm after undergrad.

I second litigation consulting, only because it's kinda how I got started. If you are interested in trying to break in through that end, also look into FTI Consulting, Exponent and Ankura. On a side note Protiviti also has a capital projects group but this is a newer practice for them I believe.

FTI has the construction solutions group which your experience should fit in. Exponent is a more scientific consulting firm a lot of Phds etc. but they also have a construction consulting practice specifically focusing construction claims/delays etc. And Ankura offers pretty much the same offering, a construction advisory practice (they acquired this practice through the acquisition of Navigent). Also, someone else mentioned KPMG infrastructure advisory, but this sometimes falls more within the financing/PPP realm so for KPMG specifically look into the Major Projects Advisory group where your experience would be more valued.

Accenture won't offer dispute resolution/litigation services, but the other big4 firms do have that capability even in a small capacity.

Just try to understand the difference in the offerings so you can tailor your resume accordingly, as someone else mentioned not all of the firms will focus heavily on PMO type work. From what I have seen the firms I mentioned above do value the PM experience.

Also keep your options open, it doesn't hurt to start off at smaller firms just to get that transition going from construction to consulting.

Hope that helps. Feel free to reach out with any other questions.

Thank you for your valuable advice and leads. I will follow up with all these leads and reach out to you more.
Yes, definitely keeping my options open. List is growing as I started networking and finding out more about such groups.

I would also look at Kearney’s ATI practice.

like

Thank you so much. Will look into this.

We have a similar practice called Infrastructure and Projects Advisory (IPA) under Capital Advisory as well if you wanted the same track.

like

Thanks for your input. I've actually applied to this group and unfortunately there is a requirement to be a US citizen which I am not. Do most roles within KPMG have this requirement?

Try to search a job title on LinkedIn and find someone in that group and chat with them. Best way to know what you’re getting into.

Thank you. I am trying to follow up on all leads. Slowly developing connections within the companies I am developing my interest and new one's that I learn off. PWC's capital excellence program is currently among the top of my list. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could help with a lead on anyone within that group. Thanks again.

Hi everyone. I’m getting ready to take the FL bar in February. I’ve been licensed in TX for 7 years but have more or less been asked to take the FL bar by my firm so I can handle more client representation. It’s been a minute since I’ve taken a Bar exam. Other than taking Barbri, does anyone have any good recommendations for how to handle Bar prepping while also working? I’m planning on asking my firm to scale back so I can have time to study, but I don’t know if there’s anything beyond that.

I have an MPH from a top program and almost 2 YOE on the provider-side. I’m currently interviewing for roles at consulting firms and I’m trying to figure out if I should get an MBA in the next few years. Some of the advice I’ve gotten thus far is that I should only get an MBA if I don’t want to stay in healthcare. Thoughts? Would an MBA from a top program give me significantly more market value, considering I may already get an offer from a great consulting firm soon?

Have a data/analytics b/g., but I’m much more social than a “typical” data/analytics person.
