On my first day as a new hire out of undergrad I showed up with a leather tumi alpha and a brigs and Riley carry on. I got a few complements but otherwise they went unnoticed

No don’t. If you are the type who thinks you need to have a Tumi to be respected as a consultant, then start looking for your next career move. I find those who brandish their luggage bags as douchbags who are akin to newbies trying too hard to fit in. Just get a presentable looking bag off Amazon (Samsonite, Travelpro etc.). While you’re at it, get some decent shirts and pants!

No one cares, buy what you want. People tend to overthink bags on this forum.

A1: you are right. No one looks at what bag one uses. Everybody is darn worried about themselves and what to do next than admiring about the freaking Tumi or whatever eff the bag is. People can be passionate over bags, but its not a prestige symbol. Get off the high horse people.

I still carry around my Swiss bag from college. No fucks.

Harris Teeter plastic bags work well too

I have the alpha 3 Tumi and I’m a 2nd consultant lol you’re good

Did you get the international one?

Yeah, what D1 said. you’re a VP, why do you care? Do you

like

VP is a consultant or similar level at some firms.

Samsonite owns tumi so not sure it matters anymore

like

Point is tumi has gone down in quality so much that it might as well be a samsonite

Partner with a cheap bag is a power move. It’s BDE. It’s Blankfein’s Swatch.

As a standard work bag... No one cares. If you're rockin a birkin handbag or something over-the-top fashionable, you're buying it TO be noticed. So... Do what you want. I'm rockin a swag bag I got from a gaming con. Lol

No one gives a fuck. They care about your work ethic and personality

Literally no one cares about this stuff. Buy what you want and don’t worry what other people will think of it. Trust me, no one is giving a second thought to it

Serious question: I’ve worked in MBB, Big 4 and tier 2, and the number one reason I’ve heard for younger (less than 5 YoE) talent leaving is that they are “not doing strategy work.” It’s also the top request from younger staffers to do on every engagement team I’ve led. The question: Are there any consulting firms really letting new talent do this? Or is this the top delusion of new MBAs entering the consulting world?

Non-US / UK consulting partners - I have been long following the posts here. What I realise is that the US partners feel very strongly that being a B4 partner is best opportunity once could have (maybe just followed by FAANG). With the $1M+ pay and a pension, potentially it makes a lot of sense. With no pensions and some of start ups, Tech companies paying more in other countries, global roles (vs local focus) - what are your views about considering opportunities outside B4

It seems like a lot of people, at least on FB, jump from big 4 to big 4. Is the grass really greener? Doesn't seem that common within MBB.

Giving notice soon for in-house role, and thinking about giving more than 2 weeks. Is this dumb? I'm getting ramped up on work on very small teams, and things are being planned in advance for clients with my schedule in mind, but I know I won't be here for that. The split will be an amicable one, and I have no reason to think they would fire me on the spot (big "culture" emphasis here), although of course that's a concern. Anyone navigated this before and have any insight?

Family law associate. I run a docket of about 40-50 cases and work about 50 hours a week. I currently make about 125K (self-employed, no benefits). Between jury trials for CPS termination cases and the highly adversarial nature of family law, I find this job to be incredibly draining, as I have horrid work/life balance and struggle with constant anxiety. I recently got an offer with a personal injury firm. 110K, full benefits, for a non-litigation/docket manager role. Thoughts?
