Medication helps me focus and get a lot done but sometimes I question if the crash is worth it. I get very depressed and sad when I suddenly stop taking it. I can’t even self talk myself out of it and the smallest things send me over the edge.
Medication has been a miracle. I was diagnosed in my late 30s. Only side effects I noticed was a slight headache from time to time. I take one large XR in the morning and a small dose in the afternoon if I know I’m working until 8. Any more than 12 hours is something I’m not using medication for. I don’t usually take it on the weekends and sometimes I can’t get things done but I don’t care. No issues with that cycle for me. Probably depends on the person, meds, and dosage. CBT is also something I’m doing but it’s not as impactful as meds. I sleep fine and still feel myself when not on the medication... just mentally disorganized.
I have ADHD, I used Vyvanse for a while and it really helped but I didn't love the crash/withdrawal effect so I slowly stopped taking it (reduced dosage and frequency until I just stopped using it all together).
What helped more long term was actually eating better, sleeping well, and not eating lunch. The amount of energy digestion takes was clearly sapping my focus. Since doing intermittent fasting and not eating until about 4pm every day, I've been very focused.
So, the coping methods you should employ are relevant whether or not you take medicine! Exercise, drink lots of water, sleep well, eat well. Minimize the impact of ADHD (and depression, anxiety, etc) as much as possible.
I was on meds which helped me focus but the crash sucked and I hated the idea of being on meds. So I weaned myself off entirely and was the best decision I made. I learned systems to focus instead and now it works better than meds. And I got healthier once I got off meds.
