It's ultimately your call. We got our pup when I was fully remote, but when I started traveling my partner would take him to doggy daycare on Monday, which tired him out for the rest of the week. He does fine for the 10-12 hours that neither of us aren't home, and will literally sleep all day after daycare. We tried long morning and evening walks, but it didn't tire him out enough, so he ended up getting bored and chewing on things. We would make the same decision if we could go back in time.

Dog will need daycare or walker daily and your partner will need to go straight home from work almost every day. It’s doble but think about those constraints. When I got a dog I thought “oh I’ll get even more exercise” but what actually happened is gym sessions / runs just became dog walks as I couldn’t fit both in my schedule.

8-6 is kind of long, could mean being out of the house 7-7. You could get a dog walker mid day and it would be fine. Know that your lifestyle will change if you go to bars it’ll be an earlier night and you’ll still have to walk it once you get back.

We got an older rescue (5 yo) over quarantine. She’s so low maintenance and I know no matter what she’s better off with us than she was when she was homeless. My SO is local and she’s ok taking more of the responsibility if travel picks up. 8-6 should be fine, we normally walk our pup 30 minutes in the morning and then 45 in the evening. Dogtopia (kennel/daycare chain) offers incredible rates and services if you’re a frequent user. I think if you buy 14 packs (can be used either for day care or overnight) it comes out to like $25 per night and she loves going. I’d highly recommend an older dog, puppies and young dogs require way more attention.

1) Doggy Day care M,W,F - will allow the pup to get exercise, be socialized with other dogs and will prevent anxiety issues to develop, as well as avoid chewing on your furniture because of boredom/anxiety. Your partner can pick him up after work 2) T/Th - Long walks in the AM and PM, AND have a dog walker come mid day Note if your partner and you are gone during the day 8-6, at the minimum, your partner needs to Walk the dog AM/PM AND you need to have a dog walker come mid day. This serves to exercise the dog, avoid boredom/anxiety issues from developing and socializing the dog. Dogs are pack oriented creatures- they need to be around other people/dogs and they need consistent exercise. They have feelings and being alone for long stretches of time literally makes them neurotic and crazy. Not exaggerating btw

Little wiener dogs are good too! Very sassy 😁

I live with my parents but precovid we all just worked 7-5 and would be out of the house 5-6 and the dog would be alone for that time. They fed him in the morning and then walked him when they came back and fed him again at night. We do live in a house with a patio though, don't know if that makes a difference.

With a dog walker + supportive partner having a dog is entirely doable.

Thanks everyone! If we do it, we’re definitely going with slightly older rescue because I don’t think we can commit to intensive puppy training. It’s really helpful to hear how you all have been managing it.

How can I set the stage this year to negotiate a lower billable hours expectation instead of a raise? As a woman I'm hesitant to be open about my reason: I want more time at home with my kids. I lateraled to this firm a year ago for WLB and they are indeed flexible on WFH which helps. Salary is a bit below average for mid-size firms like mine in my area, and I didn't get a raise or bonus this year because I didn't hit the billable target (1900). Ideally I'd keep my salary but go to 1600 hours.
