THIS IS THE WAY
to get an interview yeah. But if you get an interview and then dont get the job the school wasnt the reason
I also say this as someone who went to Iowa state which is about as far as a target school gets
What’s wrong with that? The schools have gone to a lot of trouble picking good students and then educating them well. Why duplicate work?
Sure, there are going to be some people who sneak into good schools, and some amazing people who go to other schools. But given that, in any selection process, these people are hard to detect it surely is not unreasonable to focus more attention on top schools.
Does any consultancy have the resources to accept applications from every school in America, have no pre-screening, and then interview all of them?

M1, I think what I really want out of this is that the firms push back on the universities to be better about the talent they acquire. If firms are vocal about wanting to recruit talent from less wealthy backgrounds, schools will have to sharpen up - no one is going to a top school to NOT get a top job (or get into a top post grad or what have you). My qualm isn't with top firms recruiting from top schools per se, its doing it and knowing you are perpetuating this issue.

I'm here after going to a state school. Plenty of us are from other state schools too

It’s a simple business case. We can find more qualified candidates with a higher accept rate at 6 or 7 elite schools and fill out class with just trips to those.
On the other hand to get the talent at state schools we would need to send teams and spend time at 50 different schools to get the same talent and accept rate.
Is there talent at a state school that is as good at the elite schools? Of course, but an Ivy has more and it’s more efficient to recruit at a smaller subset of schools.
The sky is blue. Your point is?

OP’s point is that roses are red
Kind of related, but I find that ppl who didn’t go to the Ivies end up staying the longest at McKinsey. So they may actually have more a hand in influencing the culture and hiring now.

Idk I got a 3.1 GPA at a non-target school and I have a final round MBB interview tomorrow. Hasn’t been a problem for me yet
I feel like consulting is the least because they can take almost any major while finance , law , med, tech, engineering are more specialized
