My job is pretty easy tbh 🤷♂️
My point is that this isnt necessarily a consulting-wide problem
We are on average making double the national average for a household by midish 20s. By 30s most are triple+, late thirties quadruple+. You’re looking at this wrong. I legit work 40 hour weeks and I’m doing pretty fucking well.
No, because their paychecks aren’t high enough to cover that expense. OP, how do you not understand how privileged you are? You get paid more than you should. Your definition of the average joe is brand new cars? You also have no empathy.
I feel you on this. Want to leave to MBB/FAANG but economy is dictating that I should stay put.
Exactly my perspective. I’m willing to work 80 hours a week while I’m in my 20s, but only if it advances my career, not if D says “good job” and gives me 0 raise and no promotion. And I hate how people keep saying that I should be grateful for a job and lucky that I’m not getting a pay cut. I’ve consistently exceeded all my metrics, been told I’m performing 1 or sometimes even 2 levels above where I currently am, stayed staffed the entire year, and my practice group and individual teams have record profits. And somehow you can’t give a junior practitioner a raise that’s less than 10% of the SM’s bonus alone?
Oh and to top it all off, even though my project is brining in money and selling work, we’re still likely to get no pay raise and minimal bonus this year. A big ‘thank you’ for all the hard work. 👌
There’s. a. global. pandemic. going. on. Millions are getting reductions or fired. So much ungratefulness. My young friend, you should be thankful that you’re employed.
Go ahead and put in your resignation, then. I have no patience for people in consulting who complain about income.
People aren’t allowed to complain?
Do it . Always remember that you’re lucky if you can take that decision without impacting your life (people on visas or for those with financial problems can’t just leave)
Good luck!
news flash peeps...merit and aip will be low
My life in consulting is not stressful at all. Maybe you’re in a bad industry or product
Silicon Valley startup. Then bigger FAANG level company. Background is technical not generalist consulting type.
Apparently OP has never had to work long hours in a stressful situation for minimum wage. This job honestly would be a blessing for many others. But I’ll echo the sentiment: Leave if you aren’t happy. It’s only your problem that you’re bitter.
Curious, what level are you and how many hours do you actually work per week? Not on call to do work, actually physically doing tasks related to work?
It depends on your group and specialty. I work for a boutique in deals and know that even for the Big 4 deals groups (S& and Parthenon) the pay is significantly better than advisory although the hours are grueling.
For example, for my pay and experience, I make 20%-30% more than my colleagues at Accenture and Big 4 advisory. I think this boils down to supply and demand - with the number of hires and how Big 4 and Accenture recruit from universities, until you are a manager you’re almost like a commodity since there are so many. However, some groups like MBB, data analyst, M&A, some types of healthcare, and others are smaller teams and smaller pool - they’re more selective and it’s more lucrative to your pay. So my advice would be to specialize.
