Get the promotion then leave for a higher paying industry gig

Hah thanks Sc1, im actually a mom! :)

I know a lot of moms who took a less travel role, or will not travel as much as a rule and the firm respects it. Also my mom and dad were both traveling consultants and we grew up fine, if you have a good support system it is very doable. I just wouldn't sacrifice the kids life for your own career, and I don't believe any firm will ask you to.

I've been a consultant for most of my career and have 3 children. It isn't easy, and likely depends on whether you work mostly close to home or are expected to travel a lot. It is easier to control your schedule the higher you get. Consulting also pays pretty well so it will give your kids opportunities later in life to have you stay. That being said, if your SO isn't supportive or you are in a full travel role, it may be difficult to juggle. You might consider an industry role (but maybe wait until you get your manager promotion) and then look to boomerang back into consulting when your kids are older and you have more flexibility at home. Most of the big4 welcome back boomerangs and see industry experience in between as valuable.

I have heard the higher you go the easier it is to make your own schedule. For example I know some people at Manager level and above that only work 8-5, maybe late evenings and no weekends at all.

I say go for it!

Get manager promo Stick around for 18 months Then leave for industry or a local consulting firm Staying til Manger plus 18 months will allow you to avoid the recruiters doubts about whether you are a real manager of someone that just got promoted and quit. It will also let you learn a good chunk of what you will learn at the manager level. Then leave for industry - as a big4 manager you should be able to get a director position in industry. That will give you the work life balance and pay you need to be a good father

Go for it. My dad wasn't around much when I was young, and my mom did an amazing job juggling between family and work. They are both my role models.

I urgently need travel to break from kid madness

Promo to what level?

I think it's easier if you manage well. I know that's kinda obvious, but good managers can delegate, keep to schedules, and not get stuck having to work till 11pm on random weeknights.

It isnt the work hours but the 3-4-5 travel thats the challenge

Get on local projects. I know ACN is focusing on local staffing

Was thinking the same D3- local gigs are rare and hard to come by, but i have a solid Ppd network

Update - i dont mean to say that you have to be in industry to be a good father. Juat meant that will give you work-life balance and pay you will need to see your kid every day and continue to enjoy your life style

Damn...removing foot from mouth now. Best of luck with your decision. As a note...there are a lot of local only consulting firms that you could look to move to - west monroe - north highland - slalom (had to put us in there)

Check out SEI. Local model.

Thanks so much guys, SO has been fairly supportive so far, but i dont want him to feel shortchanged and in tech if you quit as an SC, very likely im guessing ill end up in a non manager like role as well

Thanks so much EY2! Thats encouraging :)

I'm a first year and just received a raise, even though I haven't been at the firm for a year yet. It's a great amount, and I'm so thankful. If I learned anything as an attorney, it's to always have everything in writing lol

I’ve been through 5+ weeks of interviews with a company that will IPO next year and they did a bait and switch on me with the offer: it was advertised as “Head of” and then during the offer-walk-through-meeting today they said “oh btw we changed the title to ‘Senior Manager’ for this role”. They offered me a salary I made 4 years ago as a manager. They offered stock options with an exercise price TBD 1 year from now…which is when they’re hitting IPO. Is that normal for stock options?
