First quote I got for a new HVAC was $16,000. Second was $9k, we went with the father and son combo for $4800.

Love it!
I’ve never had to do something similar but my gut says yes, you are. I’d get some other quotes
Definitely get more quotes. At least 3.

SM1 hit the G spot!
Usually 3 give you a fairly good idea on what the work will cost. On bigger projects (flipping the whole house) I usually to 6+, including new contractors, local contractors and contractors I previously gave jobs to. Usually I book them all at the same time so they see that they have competition and give me their best prices up front.
Never go with the first quote, especially if they get a hint that you don’t know how much it should cost. It’s like blood in the water during shark week!
Ex. As a new investor I was flipping a whole house and had one plumber give me a quote of $22,000 for a new Navien tankless duel purpose water heating system and floor board heating throughout. My mentor stepped in and told the guy to go take a hike. The next 3 quotes for the exact scope of work came in around $10,000-12,000. Lesson learned.
In MA probably not
Some contractors give out ridiculously high quotes because they are too busy for the work. Get more quotes. I like using Thumbtack for this.
Definitely try to get at least 2 more quotes. Contractors like to go high if they can tell you’re young or new to the game
