I thought the primary focus of roles in new HQs was sales and marketing (and maybe supply chain / ops). If so, the impact would be less than in the case of product or strategy roles.
C4 - How much does Amazon pay? It can’t be much more than big consulting firms who have offices in every city right? Isn’t it your typical corporate pyramid with most of the underlings a making under $100k? I don’t get why it makes a whole area unaffordable...
NE Region MBB/BIG 4 resource pools will be decimated.
I’m already planning my exit in 2020 to Amazon
Brace yourself, Market Salary Adjustment requests are coming
Just bought a house in Northern Virginia so I'm sitting happy
I own 4 houses in Northern VA. Could not be more stoked for this
None, it was a PR stunt and they gathered a bunch of data for all cities.
Capital One probably the single biggest loser here
The average salary will be between 100k - 150k. Everyone will be applying
Have any of you talked to anyone who works at Amazon? Or read any of the reviews of Glassdoor? The burnout rate is v high at amazon, even higher than the BIG 4. Have fun leaving and trying to come right back
I’m worried about rent in northern va . It’s already soaring high this will make it even worse.
If SA (Big 4) moving to Amazon get $150+k, many people will leave
I’m worried about DC traffic and rent prices. I’d hate for this place to become another San Francisco
New Yorker here, all I can say is that Amazon’s new HQ is gonna jack up rent prices in Queens. It could be pretty good for business/consulting though, only time will tell.
Microsoft, Google, Oracle, etc don't have alot of jobs in the DC area. With Amazon coming, the talent pool will have better options. I can see Amazon's competitors opening hubs in the area within the next few years.
I have 3 close friends at amazon. Also have 2 coworkers who used to work there. The culture is horrible. Hours are similar to banking in most departments
DMV area homes are about to be pushed higher than they already are!.
Will be a great non-federal exit opp for those looking to do tech in the DC area, I think it may be more difficult for government to retain top tech talent than consulting firms!
Yes it will regardless what we say workforce, career decisions, hiring decisions will be impacted
Everyone should calm down. Firstly they aren’t changing their HQ, it’s still going to be Seattle. Secondly, these smaller hubs are split into 2 making the effect of each pretty diluted. Thirdly I know they said that they would add potentially 50k more jobs, but that’s not all going to be at once. It would take years given that amazon maintain its current trajectory. Amazon already has pretty much the entire online market so it’s going to be tough to keep maintaining that. I really don’t see too much effect in NYC given that there are literally thousands of companies that can afford to pay similar wages. DC may get a kick in the ass, but cmon our federal taxes are not going to be raised because a company decided to move 25k jobs there.
What kind of hq2 would it be? Would it have shared services, corporate strategy, marketing, IT, operations, supply chain functions? Once you know, need to understand what kind of roles it would have? Answers to these questions will dictate the impact. Hard to say in absence of data, what impact it will have.
