Cooley wouldnt fire stub years would they? Generally, would the incoming first years be on the chopping block or can they be considered safe?

Honestly don't worry about it (easier said than done I know). You are probably safe but if you're not there is pretty much nothing you can do -- it won't be performance related. Entirely out of your control.

I (personally) think it’s immoral to fire new stubs now. Literally mess up their entire career. Firing a true first year now is one thing (they are rehireable), but I remember in 08 (when I was a stub), my law school classmates who were fired in January/March 09, none of them were able to get back into big law. I was lucky enough to be at a firm that also didn’t believe in firing stubs, but that was dumb luck (when we were interviewing for jobs three years prior, there’s no way to know which firm was which)

like

Agree and it’s also stupid because presumably everyone you hired shows promise to be good based on whatever hiring criteria. After so much sunk cost recruiting them, just wait a year to see which ones are good and which ones are bad/meh, then lay off the bad ones at that point.

Hi Fishes,

Performance great. Received two applause in 7 months. Utilization more than 95. No compliance violation. But I heard from my onshore manager we have to spend 4 years at Con to become a SCON. As I have seen posts in this bowl I am pretty much sure it is 3 under normal circumstances.
My YOE as of today is 4. I dont think they should set my target year as 2026 or something. What do you guys suggest on setting my target year for promotion?
Thanks

Additional Posts in Big Law

I just got an offer for a lateral position and have until Feb 12 to accept (I’m going to). They’re eager for me to start. Once I accept, it won’t take long to clear conflicts so I could theoretically be giving my firm my 2 weeks as early as next week. I have had a vacation planned for a while the last week of Feb (2 biz days in a remote cabin) — is it bad if I take it during my 2 weeks notice? Or should I postpone my start date?

Did anyone apply for unemployment benefits when they voluntarily left their last employer? I left my last firm and am actively looking for work, so I think if anything I would receive benefits for a month or so. I feel a stigma around collecting unemployment, but also feel like it’s my right. I’m worried about previous and future employers knowing I’m doing so—I think the extent of the previous employer knowing is just a notification to HR to avoid fraudulent applicants.

What’s everyone’s view on lateraling vs moving offices within your firm when moving?

For context, almost third year moving to DC for my spouses job. My firm is a top firm in my current city (secondary market) but not as much in new city (still a big office). I have a good reputation at my firm and like the people/work in my office. Is it worth it to try and lateral to a firm with a larger DC presence or have people had positive experiences moving offices within your firm?

How do you spend all your money?

After beginning to earn north of 200k/year, I quickly realized that you can only eat a certain amount of food, expensive clothes aren’t that much better than cheaper ones, a home is a home, you can’t drive more than one car at a time, and holidays can be tiring and eventually boring.

Sure, you can save up, but most retirees without a mortgage don’t need 200k a year.
