Corporate counsel at a big tech co. Left big law as a mid level. Can’t help but feel like most of my work is admin in nature and that my growth and development is getting stunted here. Is this normal? I generally like my job but don’t want to just punch in the clock for the next 30-40 years.

Can we switch jobs?

likefunny

Hey, you do you - I’m more than happy to build savings/resume in biglaw for a couple years then peace out to a boring 9-5

like

Can I ask what kind of admin work you’re getting roped into? I’m Corp Counsel at big tech as well and would love to be more involved in admin and less in actual legal work…

Is there room for advancement?

I’m still getting my head around the idea that dealing with Hiring/HR issues, being on a particular admin working group, and similar tasks are now a part of my job that is viewed almost as important as my legal work.

Fortunately, while I do fewer deals than I used to, I do deeper dives on each deal than when in private practice and my deals are still sophisticated, so I don’t feel like I’m losing my skill set at all.

I move up to AGC in the spring, and expect the admin stuff to grow even more as a result.

It’s an adjustment for sure. And I went in house after 20 years in private practice. Emotionally, I still feel challenged by not having something measurable to like billable hours to demonstrate what value I’m adding; but I also recognize that many of my business side peers don’t exactly burn the midnight oil and are integral parts of the business.

But despite recognizing that intellectually, the emotional exposure still exists (even if its’s unwarranted).

This exact same thing recently happened to me. Tempted to return to a firm.

like

Yes it’s normal. You won’t develop the same skills in house as you would in private practice. You can, however, develop different ones if you know where to look.

Can you add a substantive part of the business to your portfolio? My corporate work is boring as hell but I have substantial commercial responsibilities that balance it out.

I’m curious — what’s the admin work? I do some biz ops type stuff, but nothing I’d characterize as admin

This sounds like the job I’m about to leave after 3 years. I feel like I’ve become the internal compliance officer to just make sure we are following company policies and coordinator of agreement tracker charts because we have so many of them

Yea. It’s all so dependent on how your department was structured and it’s budget for actual admins. Sounds like your company keeps a tight enough budget that it’s worth it to have some of your hours go to admin.rather than take on a new resource.

Fwiw I think bigger legal departments function more like a law firm where you are primarily tackling legal issues and smaller departments do a lot more admin/operations/organizational tasks

Car Tire gurus - Yokohama Avid Ascend GT vs LX. I live in CO so winter capability is important, but with a Subaru Outback the car already is well equipped.

Question is whether or not the GT is that much better in the snow that it is worth foregoing an extra 20,000 miles potential tread life with the LX.

I’m leaning LX, but welcome all thoughts!

I had a call with the Leader of my Consulting practice at Deloitte to let them know that I received an official job offer from a competitor. I asked that the firm matches my offer but they declined. It would’ve been an additional 13K a year to my paycheck. Scared if I stay at Deloitte after having this conversation, I’ll get laid off at year-end. How likely is that to happen?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I continuously have a problem with one of our business unit leaders wanting to have a more “direct” relationship with outside counsel on major litigations. This involves scheduling calls to discuss strategy, etc. when I’m not available. Our counsels are sympathetic, but it’s awkward to need to ask them not to take this person’s calls and/or to brief me after the fact. Anyone else dealt with a similar situation? How do you deal with these types of issues?

Have had a lack of interest now for a couple months. Just generally not interested in anything going on at work. Part of it is some new initiatives and new leadership - and I am just not drinking the kool aid. It is hard only having one client sometimes. There’s no escape. Does anyone else who came from a busy private practice with dozens of clients ever feel burnt out from dealing with the same people day in and day out? The same people are always making trouble. Senior associate considering an in-house role but am not sure about how conflicts play into the equation. The in-house role is kind of my ideal job (sector counsel) and I’m really excited about it. However it’s at my biggest client’s biggest competitor. Both are Fortune 100 companies. My client provides maybe a quarter of my work and I am regularly adverse to various sectors/businesses of the new company for my big client and a few other clients. This feels like a no go. Thoughts?
