The only thing accurate about the show Suits, when it comes to the practice of law, is that lawyers work late into the night. The most inaccurate thing is that files are neatly contained in tiny blue folders - oh and that people apologize after being a jerk 😂

I’m in L&E and want to develop business but am still in a spot where most people who reach out are old classmates likely looking for free legal advice (e.g., question about their employment agreement). How do you all respond to messages asking to set up a call?

For my latest email like this, my current plan is to respond asking for the parties’ names to run a soft conflicts check, and I was thinking about including my hourly rate to make it clear it’s not free. Any tips?

I am a junior biglaw lit associate who is extremely extroverted. Unfortunately, I’m realizing that so far litigation hasn’t been as great for extroverts as advertised. Is this just the nature of being a junior attorney in any practice anywhere? Are there specific specialties within litigation that extroverts particularly enjoy? I generally like what I do but working crazy hours in mostly isolation doesn’t seem sustainable long term for my personality type.

Can’t decide if I’m being ghosted by a partner or if I’m just reading into it. Had a good discussion about a matter that we wrapped up and then I went on vacation. Thoughts?

Does anyone else work under a “mentor” whose perfectionism doesn’t allow you to develop your own practice style and strengths? I came from a smaller firm where I was very much encouraged to come into my own and I feel that that is strongly discouraged at my new firm. Instead of exploring style, I very much am coached that something must be done a certain way and something about my work is always wrong. Anyone else?
