Could Deloitte possibly just purchase one of the MBBs? Then it would be MBD. Or MDB. DBB. Seems like MBA grads and top talent are really preferring Deloitte these days

At OP

The MBBs most likely enjoy their ability to stay objective.

You trumpet deloitte's ability to implement a strategy as an advantage. I look at it as a disadvantage.

A seldom mentioned but impressive advantage of an MBB firm is that they cannot do the implementation (outside of a small few areas)...hence a client can view their advice as impartial instead of having to wonder if they are recommending something in order to generate business for their implementation groups.

Lets evaluate a hypothetical but very real situation...how often have you done a strategy assessment where you recommend less technology as the solution...especially when the client and the partner were already talking about how the follow on tech work?

Why do Deloitte folks keep pushing this train of thought???

You remember when PwC acquired Booz?? I mean I know they were MBB but a strategy house nonetheless. And it was this BIG push to say PwC can do it all strategy through execution. Power of One! Wait... that's a book. Category of One. That acquisition didn't go so well... for both internal and external reasons.

the operating model is different between MBB and Big 4. Global partnership vs almost a "franchise" model... same nameplate but independently owned and operated. Then there is the conflict when it comes to advising vs audit... became an issue with Booz portfolio when they fully integrated to PwC. It's messy and I don't see any MBB entertaining acquisition by Big D or any others.

D6, every client disses the previous consulting firm. There is a reason they made a change. Nothing to do with MBB. Deloitte likely has many more pissed off ex clients thanks to your scale.

I will say that I do Deloitte strategy and we often don't recommend some kind of transformation. I truly believe that we give honest advice.

We bought Monitor to enhance the breadth of our strategy practice. With that said, our firm survives and thrives on big tech and m&a projects. Big projects are not as sexy, but they can sometimes give you a chance at stability and work life balance. We get paid less because our work is more tactical. To KPMG cleaning our projects... yes that happens but we also clean your messes. Every firm has good talent and bad, including MBB.

like

The quote I've gotten from the last 3 day 1 delivery projects I've been on in reference to Mck and Bain was something to he effect of "I'm so glad those fucking assholes are gone." The MBB guys I know are nice; do you guys think you come across as dicks to clients? I work in mfg so there's a blue collar feel up to the exec ranks - could have something to do with it.

I'm at D. we have great talent but can't practically have the depth McKinsey has. given the size of our shop. I'm also close with a top Director at McKinsey - they aren't living off of Strategy work these days.

^thats true Slalom. Can't disagree with you there, you nailed it. Just figured that the combined capabilities would increase/improve the breadth of delivery and change. Oh well

like

Most mbb staff also DON'T want to do implementation (the partners obviously prefer to take the money if it's at the right price-point because it means selling less often) so they likely wouldn't see a Deloitte acquisition favorably just like the Strategy& guys wren't thrilled about pwc. There would probably be significant attrition to the other mbb.
I also don't think the partners would want to sell, ad long as the firms are performing (tbd where Bain stands) since their mbb pay is likely higher than b4 partner pay. Sure they could sell b4 implementation projects but those are at much lower margins

Ever notice these kind of threads never have input from MBB? Because they're too busy not giving a shit. OP/This thread makes me want to not work at Deloitte even though they are more prestigious at EY.

I chose Deloitte over McKinsey. Culture matters. I've had three projects at Deloitte so far and they have all been strategy. My friends at MBB are mostly in factories in bumblefuck middle America making factories more efficient.

@OP: Lol. You are part of the BIG4 buddy. Doesn't matter what they say at your orientation, end of the day Big 4 is not the same as Big 3.
