Could I get a range/band of Tax Manager salaries in the Minneapolis market? I am at 144k, M2. What’s the max to get before SM level?

Stupid question but what is M2? Second year manager?

Yes, 2nd year Manager. Looking for a range from M to SM.

I'm an M2 tax in another Midwest city at 120K, so is probably reasonable dependent on your specific tax line

Ok. Any idea about the max to get before reaching SM level? Any range?

Given where you are at, I would say SM range is probably starting at 180k.

Good to know, thank you!

What are these like NYC rates?

How many total years of experience do you have?

There is overlap between M and SM pay bands in tax. SMs can start as low as 145k in LCOL cities; whereas there are Ms making in the high 160s or 170s.

Sounds good, thank you!

How does one find direction in what they want to do in life? I don’t find my job as a tax manager fulfilling and my busy time conflicts with some of my favorite hobbies, skiing and snowmobiling. I find it hard to determine my next step because I’m all about relationships, love my clients and am a sales/big picture thinker, so naturally industry doesn’t interest me. I’ve been super lost for a few years and think I need to act on my unhappiness and get out while I’m young. Any advice?

Is it me or does the newer generation value more intangible things that aren’t easily measured like work-life balance, fulfillment and purpose in work. Which makes it difficult for firms because that’s not something that is easily measured. Also, this is why there is “value” in crypto, NFTs and the metaverse. It’s a clash of the generations that value tangible things like money, houses, cars and one that values time, experiences, personal online image. Thoughts?

It seems like everyone is in agreement that switching firms gives you a salary boost, but that you could be viewed as someone that doesn’t stick around. Has anyone felt like they got held back from jumping firms every 2-3 years for the salary bump? I know peers that bounced around 2-4 times in a 7 year span and they are making significantly more money than if they stayed at their first job, however it didn’t seem like any of the new companies cared that they bounced around. Other experiences?
