Could I pull off asking my manager from J1 for approval of freelancing on the side? It’s quite common anyway for designers I think. And then my j2 can be “freelance” even though it’s full time?

If you are “freelance on your own time” does that have to get pre-approved or does that expose that it’s overlapping during the work day? Otherwise why would you need pre-approval?

To me it’s almost better to say you’re taking a class as people do work and get certificates or a degree at the same time.

I agree with you. Designers can get away with being full time and freelance.

I think if you did ask they would want to make sure there isn’t a conflict of working on similar campaigns. I don’t know. I think it’s risky to ask, but report back if you do!

So… I am working on a project with outside consultants that wraps up this week. I’m feeling some kind of “vibe” with one of the male consultants and I am wondering how to figure out if I am imagining things or whether there is actually something there. He lives is another state and it doesn’t seem likely our paths will cross again.

My organization absorbed another and the former deputy PM became a branch head - a demotion. For org was more focused on tech dev and not delivering a product on a sked. New org is very focused on that. He is not a driving leader, but is the only one with the tech knowledge needed. He is retirement eligible. He has no heir apparent - previous org didn’t plan that way. If I move him under someone who is a driver - he retires and I lose the knowledge. If I don’t, we may not meet schedules. Advice?

In small companies (especially startups), where HR may not really exist or the HR person may be the main violator, how do you deal with inappropriate behavior. If a person has been there a long time and is "too important to fire" how do you handle them?

At a startup I left because of this, my boss had been there since day 1. He was a nightmare. The last straw was when he took out his anger at a home issue on me and made fun of me for being upset. HR told me they couldn't do anything about him.

She at least seems to tolerate Ollie which i consider a win. Pardon the photo, Cinder’s color is really unique and the photo doesn’t do her justice.

I’ve been on the bench with J1 for about 3 months. I was worried that because I couldn’t find another project, I would get laid off so I found J2, which pays more, is very meeting heavy, but I really like. I’ve kept J1 because I’m still on the bench doing absolutely nothing and getting paid. Thinking about looking for a role on a project with J1 that’s not along my career path but will allow for me to do work with no calls so that I can manage both jobs. Does anyone have experience or advice?

J1 & J2 together make about 200k although there is no room for growth in either but WLB is amazing (< 10hrs per week). I know many consultants most likely make more. Any one else feel this way or have any thoughts? I was thinking of looking for a different J1 and slowly try to climb up if possible.
