Could someone please opine on the different styles of mens dress shoes worn with suits and if some are more appropriate in certain situations?
I’m trying to buy a pair for my fiancé and I’m not sure if a brogue wingtip or monk strap is considered to be less formal than a dress shoe that has no pattern/texture. Are plain/textureless shoes better with suits? Does it matter if the occasion is for court? TIA!

Plain shoes are more formal, although frankly, nobody is inspecting dress shoes in the courtroom. I wear brogue/wingtips to court fairly regularly and have seen others do the same.

I typically wear brown wingtip oxfords or black cap toe oxfords when I go to court.

Plain more formal than pattern, and the more pattern the less formal. Similarly, in formality, generally oxford/balmoral > derby/blucher > monk strap > loafer.

helpful

If you’re actually going to court, the judge never sees your shoes. A nice pair of black tassel loafers is fine for a motion/status conference, etc. More formal shoes for trial.

In CA, if an employee has to call his employer the night before to see if they are scheduled to work the following day, do they need to be compensated anything if they are NOT called in? For instance, let’s say this person kept the following day open and did not make any plans only to find out at 9pm the previous day that he is not needed. If he was called in, he would not have the option to turn it down.

People in my office will say these things are fun, that I must be enjoying it. But I don’t enjoy it and I want to puke most of the time.
