Could use some advice (23 yo): currently allocating close to my max in a Post Tax 401k to Target Date Fund, max my Roth IRA every year in Vanguard’s VOO, as well as have ~$6,000 in another VOO fund. I started trading on Robinhood ~5 months where I casually throw $500-$1000 every other month depending on expenses to some of my fav stocks. Should I continue to play stocks like this or do more of a sector wide approach within Robinhood even though I am pretty diverse with VOO?

I would suggest relooking at that target date fund. They tend to have high fees. Good luck op

First rational decision would be to get out of target date fund. It basically invests and rebalances your portfolio between stocks and bonds which you can do yourself so you don't need to pay high fees for that. Also, just find low cost vanguard s&p500 and broad market index funds in 401k and invest in those. Some recommend having exposure to international markets but I've splitinr 50/50 in S&p500 and extended market index funds with expense ratio <0.1%. Also look at prospectus and find funds that have load fees and avoid them like a plague. Why pay 5% of contribution to invest in a fund? To make sure you're working hard to make wall street rich that's why. My $0.02 :D

OP, it's always good to think about whether you're investing all your eggs in a basket. However, when it comes to 401k, usually the options are limited and more than half of them are completely unfit for long term investment because of high fees and lower than market return. In that case, a broad market index fund with low expense ratio is the safest bet that'll preserve your retirement fund as well as grow. Over long period of time, small ups and downs in broad market fund won't matter. Those fees will eat away every year though. In your IRA, you are allowed to invest in a broader set of investment vehicles so you can diversify to your liking. I own some tech ETF and stocks of some individual companies that I think have a high growth potential long term and are large stable companies. I'm okay being a bit aggressive here since I have a long time horizon and relatively smaller amount invested in IRA compared to my 401k. I can stomach swings in my IRA but swings in 401k might keep me up at night. In my taxable brokerage, I just do whatever I want

You're doing good. You're doing a "Core & Explore" model. Keep it up, but I'd limit your individual stocks to around 10 max. Nothing wrong with your set up. The biggest thing is just to keep at it.

Appreciate the insight!

You are doing well, I’d suggest to move out of the target fund and move to the high growth funds that vanguard offers so you can take advantage of the economical downturn.

SPYD is a good index fund if you care for dividends

Also, I’m not making many short term trades. Mostly buying into things I’ve read up on and believe will be big in >1 year or longer. But not opposed to 3-6 month trades.
