National firms have great technology, tools and very solid professional development programs. They also have prestigious clients. They might not be huge clients but they’re prestigious nonetheless. I can’t comment on what life at big 4 is but I can tell you everything about what career at a national firm looks like. Our business model is different which means you’re not put on one client year round doing the same type of work. We can’t afford that. Coming into a national firm you can decide to focus on an industry and pick a minor. You will have exposure to multiple clients at the same time, doing different things on each of those engagements. You will be a well rounded professional with great time management skills, ability to multi-task and manage projects. Big 4 hire people from national and regional firms all the time and that is a testimonial to the fact that we are developing outstanding professionals.

Big4 tend to have better technology, better tools, better training, more prestigious clients. Other hand, regional/mid market firms give greater opportunities to work on a variety of sections and be more involved in the planning/execution. Start in Big4 and consider switching to mid-market because that’s the best of both.

I moved from big four to regional. The work and resources are pretty similar as we all follow the same standards. Agree with what you said. One thing that shocked me when I first moved was how much more my peers at regional knew than I did. That’s simply because they get exposure to more areas and like you said planning and reporting and basically they own the entire audit at experienced staff and senior level. Over the years I really fell in love with that and my clients. But what I fell in love with more is the people. I really liked big four and they have a place in my heart but culture is definitely different. See above from KPMG1 as an example. I know not everyone there is like that but let’s just say it’s not shocking to see many people like that at big four. And it’s a shame because bad behavior doesn’t just represent an individual. It reflects poorly on a firm. Thank YOU for being a good KPMG-er :)

I quit a small PA company to join big4 but my manager here is picky and she fixed everything that I did to her way. Now old manager asks if I want to come back if she matches the salary. What should I do? Yes I like my old manager, team and it was so comfortable back there. I don’t like big4 timesheet and the reason I left my old company because of I moved to different city. But now old company can provide wfh as well as big 4 I’m working now. Can someone give me advice?

Been working on mostly (about 70%) public sector policy and strategy at Big 4 for most of my career. Often go up against MBB on RFPs and have a decent win rate. Would I be too senior to come in as a lateral hire? I guess it’s all about client networks at this level, and being government, it’s locationally dependent - so which markets have need?

Hi everyone, I’m a student interning at a MM CPA firm in the assurance practice. However, I’d like to transition into TAS at a big 4. I’ve had past internships in VC and HF, but am still having trouble getting past initial screening and have little to no alumni in TAS to reach out to when attempting to network. Has anyone had the same experience as me or can anyone help me out? Thanks!

A couple questions for the turnaround consulting fishes: 1. Is FP&A experience valuable for restructuring/turnaround consulting? I’m a CPA with experience in Big 4 FDD and a short stint in IB. Total work experience is a little over 2 years. I recently joined a RE company as a Sr FA in FP&A where I expect that I’ll be mostly doing budgeting & forecasting work. 2. If my goal is turnaround consulting, what should I focus on right now to best position myself? I appreciate any insights/guidance.

Has anyone gone from tax to fp&a? What did you have to do to get an interview? Did you need to learn any new skill? What level should I aim for if I’m a B4 1st yr senior?

Any experienced senior managers that have moved between Big 4 firms? Can you speak towards your experience, any struggles, and opportunities in terms of partner promotion? Frankly, EY path to partner seems to be too clouded (long pipeline, no clear direction/path, uncertainty on promotion cycles, etc.) at the moment and I would like to visit all options. Appreciate the input.
