Couples who split finances: how do you set aside money for shared, mid-size item purchases such as a vacation or new furniture? Continued below...

We both keep separate bank accounts, ones we each had pre-marriage. We opened a third, joint one we both deposit $ into and then use that money for any shared expenses.

like

We do what’s mine is yours, etc. No splitting. But we have very similar buying habits / priorities. For new furniture, look for a credit card who is offering 0% interest for the first year so you can pay it off over time with no penalty. I did this with JCPenney and Home Depot. Otherwise there was no way I was going to be able to afford furniture.

like

Rather than having separate accounts, we do the opposite. Everything is combined, and then we keep a certain amount out per paycheck for personal spending money (I.e. weekend trips with the girls, or gifts for each other). It’s worked for us, since the majority of our expenses are combine

like

We only have one bank account we both share for everything. Appreciate this doesn't work for everyone and there needs to be a lot of trust but basically we treat everything we earn as mutual.

like

I’m sure there’s a better option than this, tbh, but I just downloaded this app Honeydue that is more or less for this exact purpose.

You create a fourth bucket and add money there... We kind of have buckets, but we do it a little different. It comes out of discretionary income, not savings, so we could decide not to do a vacation if we need a very expensive piece of furniture. The rule we have is to talk it all out and plan it.

like

It’s just all our money. If we spend $100 here or there, it’s not a discussion. If we are spending $3000 on a vacation, it’s a joint decision.

like

I recommend two separate accounts, and a third shared account for the living expenses .

like

We have 3 buckets - savings, essentials (food, rent, utilities, health insurance, etc) and the third is fun money split 50/50 (new clothes, eating out, etc). The third is not a large amount - just enough to have a little fun. Not sure where to set money aside for these other bigger purchases. Curious how others are handling this.

Who makes more money? for the one that has less disposable income, a lavish vacation would take longer to save up. Something to think about. In that instance, maybe one person (the one who makes more) can pay for more.

Denver Fishes - I need some serious help. I got an email from my future employer, Accenture, to get my i9 authorization done while I am here on vacation. I don’t know too many folks here. By any chance could someone help me out with this? I can send you the info and coffee/lunch is on me.

Does anyone have experience with asking for a lower hour requirement and a proportional salary decrease? (E.g. staff attorney, counsel, etc.) I don’t have kids (yet) but I’m fortunate in that my husband and I both have great salaries and we talk a lot about “How much money is enough” for us and would just rather have more time off/more flexibility. Life is short. 💕

Has anyone ever tried negotiating for more vacation rather than a higher salary? I'm applying and interviewing for jobs right now. Some firms have unlimited PTO while others only give a few weeks. Personally, I'm much more interested in getting an additional week of vacation and would rather negotiate for that but usually only hear of people negotiating for salary. Has anyone had experience with this?
