COVID-19 Refunds - Anybody getting refunds for prepaid monthly services- after care/daycare, nanny services, etc.? In the area we live in the day cares are just not giving any refunds, so unethical.

My daycare is giving a refund for April (sigh - guess they won’t be reopening) and half of March. They also confirmed that they are still paying their staff throughout the closure from their reserves. The staff are at home doing professional development, child assessments, etc. I’m very happy with this outcome. I would have also been happy with continuing to pay the fees so that the workers, who make minimum wage, can continue being paid.

Friends of mine are doing virtual babysitting sessions with their kids’ preschool teachers. An hour of FaceTime interaction and the teacher leads yoga or drawing or reads a story. The kids are thrilled to have the full attention of their godlike teacher, and the parents get to keep paying the teacher, and also have an hour to do work.

OP, there are many businesses I would probably want a refund from for unused services during this time: restaurants, gyms, hotels, concerts... but childcare is at the very top of my list of things to keep paying as long as I can because it’s a highly differentiated service. I can’t just substitute a different nanny randomly and get the same quality of care. It definitely is a huge struggle to have to do all the childcare on top of paying for all the childcare so I feel frustrated about the situation, but IMO this is the right thing to do.

I'd ask if they were continuing to pay their employees. If the answer is no, then that is quite unethical. If it's yes, they made a choice in loyalty that I understand and actually agree with.

likesmarthelpful

it’s not unethical. If they stop collecting fees they will be out of business and you will not have a day care to go back to! Having said that, ours is giving a 50% discount for April . I would have been happy to pay them the full fees .

Yup, M1 nailed it! Otherwise, when this is done, how do you expect them to have kept on the staff that takes care of your children???!

I take private lessons at a very small Pilates studio and it’s been life-changing in terms of my health. They’re switching over to doing virtual lessons (minus the equipment). Am I getting the ‘same’ value? Probably not. Do I want them to be around when this is over? Hell yes I do! So for as long as I’m financially able I’ll stick it out and keep paying.

When my gym suspended classes, they didn’t issue refunds but froze the clock on all accounts. I’m ok with this solution, means the same to me.

Yeah, it’s WAY better to pay and keep the place open/keep your kid’s spot. The alternative is tons of centers closing then having to fight tooth and nail with thousands of other parents for the few spots available when this is over.

like

Yeah, and I actually don’t think it has to be that much worse for this to happen. I already had to do waitlist and all that to get my kids into their current place. I can’t imagine if even 2 or 3 of the center in my town closed..

My dance studio offered refunds while announcing cancellations for a few weeks and a bunch of us declined it. It’s very touching when people volunteer to support the business. Some instructors offer free or “pay what you can” online tutorials and my friends and I try to join and pay as much as we feel comfortable with. If you really need the money, ask for a refund. If not, support those in need.

I really love these humans

I have to say, the positive of all of this (though a very awful situation) is I’ve really seen humans become nicer people (other than those hoarding). Most people I’ve come across are being so much more helpful, kind, and considerate.

CS1 - did you read the entire comment? I said “other than those hoarding”... 🙄

I’m paying full fees even though I am not using them. Told the owner I want them to keep paying their employees, so when this is over we have a place to go back to and friendly faces my kids know and love. They did offer a discount for April, however, I have declined and told them I will be paying full price.

I’m a little annoyed my daughter’s private school is charging FULL tuition when they closed for half of March and all of April. I’m all for paying the teachers and staff, but the full tuition payment covers a lot more than that. While I homeschool with some worksheets for her teacher but no Skype or other live class interaction or instruction.

My son’s college - MICA in Baltimore, is sending refund checks for housing, and they are continuing to teach classes online.

Daycare shut down March 15 and charged full tuition for the month. April is still “under consideration,” but needless to say I’m working from home 1:1 with a toddler and paying for the privilege of doing so...

But how about that auto insurance - we’re all driving way less, I’d expect premiums to be a third or a quarter of what they actually are right now.

Hotel isn’t giving me a refund for a room in May...

What rates are you booking?

Is networking still key as an experienced hire? Networking was really helpful when I was applying to consulting as a student, because of the clear recruitment cycle most firms followed. Now that I’m looking to switch to industry, I’m looking at specific roles / depts at specific companies. Companies often seem to want to fill these roles quickly so no time to network, and on networking calls people can’t help as much if you are targeting a specific dept. any thoughts?
