Coworker: I'm heading to jury duty soon and I'll do anything for them to pick me so that I can finally have a vacation from work! I'll tell them to put me on the trial of the century! 😂😂😂

There's no better way top commit career suicide than telling your partner "I have to abruptly leave the project because I want smart enough to evade jury duty"

like

You can't always 'evade' jury duty. But I don't think jury duty should be as stress-free as your colleague is assuming it will be. He/she is messing with someone's life

like

But you should do it - jury duty is the best way to participate as a citizen. Voting doesn't matter in most situations and you're unlikely to run for office, but as a juror you are leading part of government.

like

Agree w the above. It's great to see how the judicial system works (even if it doesn't sometimes) and actually important.

like

That's a good gig. I want in.

like

Be real. They would make you do work at night after your jury duty is over at 5PM.

I was on a jury panel for 2 weeks last summer for an intense insider trading case. I think I learned more in that two weeks than I've learned in the last 2 years!

like

U get per diem for jury duty???

Heh yes you can always avoid jury duty, look up jury nullification, judges hate it.

Tell me if this is selfish or not. I adore my family, but since they're doing a very lowkey Christmas situation this year, I really would rather take a weeks vacation on my own. Obviously the holidays are about spending time with those you love, but I'm tired! And I see my entire family at least once a month for a group dinner. Am I a bad daughter/sister if I choose vacation this one time?

Job offer extended but now some red flags… I was extended an offer today with a pay raise and great benefits. It’s in a field that interests me more but, now some red flags have come up. They voided my offer after asking for time off way in advance in December of this year & the pay that was discussed on the phone is different from my offer letter. I asked the recruiter to clarify and she said I must’ve not heard her correctly on the phone. I’m not having second thoughts… I was excited.

Have a primary home and a vacation home. We go to vacation home for holidays as family is near by but it is a 2 day drive to get there or a plane ride. With our pups driving has become more of the norm. We do not rent when we are not there. Thinking of buying third home about 4 hours from primary home on the coast for enjoyment. I worry about juggling 3 homes. Anyone with experience with this? Advice?

Full time role with 3 weeks vacation and benefits or contract opportunity with 20k more in potential salary.

Little background, I have been a loyal employee and have only worked at 1 firm for about 6 years now. Looking for more growth and obviously money.

Need some suggestions on what to consider and any pitfalls that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

what difference does 109% vs. 100% utilization make at Year End? Latter basically means you took your PTO, former means you worked every minute of the year (Consulting, S&O)

Hi everyone! How did you discuss with your boss all the time you’d be needing to take off for appointments? My boss absolutely hates when people take time off. Company policy is at least a week ahead of time - she says she needs at least 2. Also when someone requests off a couple days in March then a couple days in April for example, she gets annoyed and says they are requesting too much time (even if they have plenty of PTO available).
