Creating a 529 for myself before having kids…Should I setup a 529 for myself?

I don’t currently have kids but probably will in the future (31M, single now). Alternatively, I may go back to school at some point, or I’d be happy to disperse/gift the $$ to my nieces and nephews too… what’s my upside/downside?

You can set one up in your name now. When you have a kid, you can change it to their name. Or to a family member’s name. Or keep it in your name and go back to school.

It provides a lot of flexibility in this regard.

like

You could just set it up for yourself and transfer funds to a child account later or change the beneficiary on the account later. I would make sure you have your retirement accounts in order before planning for child’s college.

Helpful. But I’m looking for more info on pros/cons..

Why is this kind of tax advantaged account better/worse than a retirement account? Is there any context in which I’d want this vs. a 401K or ROTH? Why/why not?

My point above was to make sure you have your retirement accounts in order first. I would use it ahead of 401k, IRA or HSA, if your plan is to use it for an investment account. You may get a state benefit and gains are tax free if used for education. Otherwise you would pay tax on gains. If you are using it for education of kids, prioritize your retirement first. If you are using it for your education and are confident you will use it, it is probably better than just using funds from a brokerage account

Maybe I’m not understanding things… but it almost seemed to me like a 529 is like a ROTH (grow taxed money, tax-free) with a trade-off (instead of an age restriction on when $$ can get pulled out, now it’s a category limitation)

You don’t get a federal or state deduction for a Roth IRA. So a 529 used for education is better than a Roth IRA if you live in a state that gives a deduction

like

Whether it makes sense to open a 529 depends on the state where you live!!

The state benefit is nice but not the only reason to use it. Even without a deduction it is very useful.

Hi all, I have a question regarding retirement accounts. I am not sure if I should choose a Roth or 401k (company has 4+2% match). Currently 23, base salary is ~100k and investments have brought 45k this year which has me teetering between a 22-24% tax bracket. Wondering what the usual tax bracket is of people retired (around 65yo) as I’m not sure anything would bring in significant income with the exception of investments. In my case would a Roth make sense? Appreciate any answers!!

And you don't need to be uber wealthy to regain control of your time.

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Alright auto fishes, I’m in the market for a entry level luxury car. Open to used or a lease. I don’t plan to use it as a daily driver, live in an HCOL. Doesn’t have to be a European badge. Thoughts?

I am an experienced hire. My case might just take you by surprise. I joined EY GDS 10 months back at 40% hike (leaving PwC) and now Deloitte (DIJV) is offering me 2 level up designation at Manager level with another 40% hike. This has effectively doubled my salary in the last one year bt still I am confused to switch or not considering the amazing bonuses GDS payed off today. Please suggest.

My husband and I have saved up about $80K and it’s just sitting in our bank account. We thought we were going to buy a townhome but with the crazy inflated prices we decided not to since we like where we live currently (location could not be better and rent is crazy cheap at only $700 a month). How should we invest our money in the meantime while we save up for a house?

1) Put 10k into iBonds and $90k as downpyament and closing costs for a property (I’ll need to put in 20%, already talked to several mortgage agents)
2) Put $0 in ibonds and put all the $100k in the home investing (given it’s a little more of an expensive property, given some other factors - location, size, etc)
