Agreed. Make the time. You know good creative. Recruiters are great. But recruiters never put together a portfolio. You can see potential they can’t.

Then do one of these three things:

1) if their book is great and they’re a good fit for your team/agency and you have a spot: hire them!

2) if their book is great but not a great fit for whatever reason, send their book to a creative director you know and see if they’ll meet with them.

3) if their book is not great, give them constructive feedback.

Honestly, we don’t do enough to help attract talent to this industry. I remember moving to NYC in 1997 and only got a job bc of kind creative directors who helped me out.

The point he’s trying to make, is to make time. It’s not going to kill anyone to look at someone’s book and tell him what’s good and what they can work on.

You’re only as good as your network. This is true if you have 1 day experience or 20+ years.

Also do it for a selfish reason: at some point, we all need good juniors. And they’re hard to find on the spot. All the freelancers I know these days are senior and often out of budget.

To help manage time, schedule the meetups in succession, in one afternoon, once every couple months on a day that has some breathing room. Call it your “mentor day.”

Totally agree OP. But I have been in many situations where good creatives have “no spot.”
We’re in an age where even if you have a great book it doesn’t guarantee open doors to good agencies.

Well- not every agency has openings at every level all of the time.. But you never know when you’ll need someone...

Disagree with basically everything that CD2 just said. This is what separates good creatives that will go on to lead and everyone else.

I was lucky enough to have some older creatives make time for me and take me under their wing. It was a great experience and now those people are CCOs. I always told myself that I would be a resource for juniors/interns/whatever because people did that for me.
I’ll get coffee, answer emails and give feedback all they want.

Yes, for sure! Also remember that if your network is all white and male, then imagine how hard it is for a woman or a person of color to find an entry point into the industry, who isn’t connected to that network. It’s why working with MAIP and similar orgs is such an important thing.

Like most tech companies, about a year ago my company started hiring remote employees. we all worked remotely for 24 months.

Now that we are reopening our offices, no one seems to be coming into the office yet. I really do not want to work remotely anymore, and I’m seriously considering changing jobs just to go back to a workplace where people are in person.

Is anybody else in this position? I feel like I am losing my mind working from home for two years with no end in sight.

When I started at a big advertising agency 12 years ago, every young single person was dating someone from the agency. Some of them grew into serious relationships and one of them got married. Today, people are scared to hold eye contact with someone of the opposite gender on the chance it makes uncomfortable. Agency hours and life are challenging to mental health as it is. I think it’s wrong to forbid romantic relationships at work. What does everybody else think?

Working with a junior who’s pretty arrogant without good reason. Their instincts are generally not quite right, but they’re very insistent (in some cases disrespectful). How do you deal with this kind of person without breaking their spirit?

Where can we review CDs and ECDs. Feedback shouldn’t be only one way. CDs and ECDs should know how they can get better as creative leaders from the people who work under them.
