Drives me insane when people don't understand the difference.
The good ones do
Project managers deal with logistics. Producers are part of the creative team, finding directing, editing, vfx, music crafts people who will bring more to the project
I spent my first year at a PR agency trying to explain the difference to them. They couldn’t grasp why I wanted to have input in what we were doing and not just keep the calendar. Drove me fucking nuts
Can you explain the difference in your opinion? I just switched from print advertising where I was a Project Manager to digital where I am a Producer. My team has never had either, so I’ve just been doing what I know which is project management. Would love to hear some of the differences from an experienced Producer.
Both are valuable and difficult jobs that aren’t generally respected by creative or account. Definition changes depending upon where you work. At an old school agency project management might mean “managing a project internally for an agency” from brief, through strategy, creative and then production. Traditional agency production means “making content outside of the agency”.Often with large budgets, shoots, outside vendors etc. honestly both jobs are hard they are just different. Both are similar in that they help direct creative energy, and help allow client services/acct to understand what’s happening so they can explain it to their clients. That said, many agencies use terms oddly so it depends where you are and what talent they have in house.
