you’re going to have to be the bad guy sometimes. you’ll remember what it was like to work through the weekend and all night, then have your ideas shot down, yet again, by your CD. you’re gonna have to do that now.
also, remember to direct the creative. don’t do the creative. your job is to make sure it’s the best creative possible, not do the best creative possible. it’ll undermine your team constantly if you do. now, if you have a better solution, feed the nugget to your team and have them solve it. don’t solve it for them.
Praise in public. Punish in private.
You don’t have to know what you’re talking about. You just need everyone to think you do :)
If you have close friends at the agency whom you now manage, keep in mind you can’t be as transparent as you once were. You also can’t indulge in those friendly bitch sessions with them anymore.
If something is going on in your personal life, go home. Don’t let it seep out. Staff are receptive to your emotions and assume it’s to do with them.
Also don’t think you can solve everything. We’re trained as creatives to try and fix problems. When it comes to a lot of people or client or financial management, rely on the departments around you.
I just read Herding Tigers by Todd Henry and it’s all about leadership of creative teams. Really smart useful tips in that book. Highly recommended
You can’t please everyone...
CD 1 hit it on the nose.
Do all the things you wish your CD did when you were growing up.
Particularly stuff about management style, office politics and handling clients.
Be kind. Inspire great work
Perception is everything
Be honest and clear in your feedback, don’t hide behind meaningless phrases just to make creatives feel good. If you constantly try to protect their ego you’ll damage their careers. Don’t compete with the CDs in your building, compete with the best ECD in business: look at their books, know their favourite directors, learn from them. And become friends with your Business Director. You’ll need their respect and loyalty, if you want to sell great work.
