Criminal defense- I’m a solo and haven’t really handled substantive criminal defense cases since I was a law clerk/intern. I really want to jump back in, curious what the learning curve and resources are. I have a mentor lined up and wouldn’t be doing this without that help, but any other words or guides would be appreciated.

What's your location? I imagine what this looks like varies widely from state to state, perhaps even county to county. It might help to connect with others in your area. Glad you have a mentor.

I would recommend spending a lot of time in court watching the judges you’ll be appearing in front of. Knowing how they run their room is hugely important. More important than the law, IMHO.

Any good recommended books on how to build a scalable product and team? I'm looking for recommendations for two areas: 1) in general laying the groundwork in a startup to have the tools and especially processes in place to scale, and 2) tactical focus on building a SaaS project. I've been promoted into a management role from Dev roots, so need to learn more PM processes to be an effective manager in day job, plus would like to start building my own SaaS solution.

Is there a general expectation that a Partner has an MBA?

I doubt it's required at most firms but I'm a pretty senior staff and when I speak with Partners, they seem to speak with an MBA level of business knowledge which extends past their technical skillset.

I realize that's what makes them good Partners but it makes me wonder if I realistically need to get an MBA to keep growing and hit Partner.

How many times would you your boss/managing attorney scream/berate you (not just frustration) before you quit? Some context: Yesterday morning managing attorney comes in legitimate screaming at me because I forgot (for the first time in over a year of employment) to lock the door when I arrived, he then brings up something that happened earlier in the week where I didn’t get clients payment info, instead emailed assistant to run payment since I’ve never been taught how to accept payment.

However, I’m still finding it difficult to get qualified associate to even apply for the position. I think part of the problem may be because we are located in a mid-sized city rather than a major metro area. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attract talent when you are a newer small firm in a mid-size market?
