If my employer 401k match doesn’t vest for few years, is that money still investable? Can I make gains on that amount? Or is the match just a lump sum that can’t be touched until it’s vested?

Told my gf (26) that I don’t want to buy a house with her because it is more straightforward for both parties if we keep things separate until marriage. We have been dating 2 years and renting together for 1 year.
I (29) suggest she uses her money to buy property separately whilst I’m happy to continue living together, whether it’s at my or her place.
She adamantly refused and cried and says we are buying together and she doesn’t want her own place.
I was calm and reasonable. What do I do?

It’s been 1 year into my first job, I don’t contribute to the 401k plan & instead put the extra money into stocks (58% of pay) and I make 10-15% annual return. Is this a bad idea? I plan on retiring and going to a place like Nepal, India, Guatemala when I retire around 40

Does anyone have recs for a cross border (Canada-US) tax expert?

I’m looking for a consultation to understand investing + retirement savings as a Canadian on F1 OPT in the USA who isn’t sure if/when I’ll return to Canada.

Thank you in advance!

I’d love to retire by 35. I know about the 25x expenses rule for a 4% withdrawal rate, but how does that account for 401ks that I can’t access until my 50’s? What about real estate?

I’m 26.
•$150k in 401k/IRA
•$220k in real estate (excl. primary)
•$88k in cash/brokerage
• the rest in HSA/primary home/other.

To calculate FIRE, am I only looking at the $88k that I can access readily? Real estate is cash flowing, but not sure how/if to factor in the equity.

Thanks in advance!

Have 250 hour months (at a minimum) always been the case in M&A? V10, NYC.

Second year who started during Covid and has billed a minimum of 250 each month since joining the group with the exception of months where I took a vacation.

Genuinely like the work, but can’t shake that I was sold the group, in part, based on statements that “we work hard, but also get more downtime than any other practice area”. Seems like a total lie at this point. Anyone experienced this elusive “downtime”?

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

I’m pretty sure colleagues at my firm are inflating their billable hours. Is this the norm? I suspect many of you will think this is obvious and/or that I’m naive but wtf? I find hitting 2200 is tough even with a good sized work load. Am I just expected to play the game?
