Culture question. I’ve always been environment where you get your work done, bill your hours, you’re good. This new job is focused on hours in the office. Is this normal? More in comments

In my mind it’s not “normal” but I can’t say it’s uncommon. The legal profession is notoriously slow to evolve and modernize and there are probably still plenty of firms that value face time more than seems reasonable

My first firm had the receptionist take down the times people arrived and the times people left. The most useless partner would stroll around on the evening keeping another roll on who was there after 630pm. Not how I think modern law firms should operate given that we sell quality hours and we only care about people being available during critical times and who get their work done while billing above the bare minimum.

My firm is not at all like that. As long as you get your work done and are available when needed no one comments or cares about when you come or go. I get in at 9-9:30 and leave at 2-4pm everyday. I work til 8/9pm at home so it’s not like I’m done for the day then but I’ve never heard any comment about when someone is coming or going. Def should address that sooner rather than later. Are you at a small firm?

Some firms are like that. Some areas of practice are also more people facing where appointments may need to be made same day with clients or prospective clients. What area do you practice? My last employer before I went it alone wanted me in the office by 8:30 am (or earlier) even though I often worked until 11:00 pm or so because it was transactional work where I needed to talk to my clients after they finished their work days. It was also typically time sensitive work. So, clients didn’t mind working late into the evening emailing and calling on matters. Most of the firm was litigation based. So, they needed to be working when OC was working. So, they didn’t really understand the benefit of coming in later and working later. I eventually realized there was really no justifiable reason I needed to be in that early. That was part of the beginning of the slow walk away from there. So, practice area and your role and duties also matter in your scheduling.

I am currently in this situation. It’s a culture problem that will not go away. Planning my exit strategy and suggest you do the same if you ever want to see your kids or take vacations.

For instance I have family responsibilities in the morning and my wife takes care of them at night. I usually stroll in between 9 and 9:30. I’ve been getting “joking” comments such as nice for you to show up etc and by all other measures I’ve produced good work / hours.

I could have posted this. Feeling this

When I was still in big law practice as a junior, I was never I. Before 10:00 am unless I knew I had to be. Used to piss some people off, but I just didn’t care and did what I was going to do anyway.

You must work at my old firm. In old school culture, this is totally normal.

Mine is lax on the office culture. Whennim in the office im in at 6/630am and leave around 4/430pn. But its been so coled nowadays that i just work at home the whole week. Partner doesnt care so long as work is done and hours are met/exceeded.

And what CTA to end with?
