I've heard it takes 12-14 years to retire... but not sure how accuate
It's different at every firm but in general, think 10 years to vest and if you make it at 40, you will retire just fine at 60... Think a higher SM salary for life plus your equity and some other things... but it depends on a lot of things including your max distributions and which plan you're under (the formula and funding are subject to change so you can have people under different plans over time) . All in all, it's not a bad deal.
Ask a partner at your firm. You might be suprised at how candid he or she will be. In general, knowing the upside of sticking around and doing well isn't a bad thing.
