Probably any time that goes beyond their PTO or sick leave time off. Since it’s a policy they only get a certain amount, they would need proof for additional pay OR unpaid time off, If your company allows that.
Most companies I've worked for require a doctor's note after 3 consecutive days out. The key is, it would need to be in the employment agreement in order for you to enforce it. Assuming you don't have a formal policy?
We have unlimited PTO. However, I request a doctors note if an absence is longer than a week with the inability to work remotely on a computer.
That's always the question when working at one of those mystical "Unlimited PTO" companies. I've not worked at one yet and, honestly, I'm glad that I don't have to. I find myself easily frustrated by people who push the envelope and I feel like you would have to deal with that all the time in a role at one of these places.
It does make things more difficult to manage with out clear guardrails. Guidelines are needed and managers need to be able to say 'no' to a PTO request if necessary. This is actually the first time where a situation was suspicious enough where I've had to request a doctors note.
More than 3 days they have to provide a note. That is just standard policy.
