I didn’t find a role that “sparked” me until I was 28. Then I got laid off at 29. 😊 I was so frustrated because I felt like I’d finally “found it” only to have it taken away. But through colleagues I found something similar - better even - and my career has skyrocketed since.
Follow your instincts.
That’s wonderful! Thank you for sharing :)
23. First job in advertising as a copywriter with my own account from day 1. ( fluke) Great client. Outstanding NYC agency ( one of the top five creative shops in the country at the time), fantastic creative and account ( except one asshat) team, won a boatload of awards, got to be an award show judge, and restricted (lol) to “only come stay/come into office if you have work to do” agency policy.
Loved almost every minute there until I apparently lost my mind and left for more money at another outstanding agency - but it wasn’t the right fit. I wasn’t happy there and left for a new adventure!
But from day one in the business, I knew I was doing what I was born to do. As a second-generation copywriter, advertising is literally in my blood. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Ever.
Ahhhh I can read the giddy in your comment ☺️ I’m sure it was the best feeling :) thank you for sharing !
33. Don’t stress. You’re building transferable skills whether you stay in account mgmt or not.
Agree, 33 here.
I’m also 26, and I haven’t found my niche, but I also know what I don’t want in a role so I think that counts. I know I don’t want to work on more than 4 clients at a time, or in hospitality again.
You are absolutely right. I tell you accounting is not for me!!
