Wow this is interesting and made me think of my actions as I, for one, enjoy the festivities of the holiday season; really just love the candy canes, holiday movies, and well decorated houses. I appreciate my friends who partake in Ramadan and try to wish them Happy Holidays, instead of Merry Christmas. I’ve participated in secret gift exchanges during the holiday season and instead of it being called “Secret Santa”, my friends/coworkers change it to something more politically friendly for me to participate. I say all of that to day, I feel in the pit of my stomach that we (myself included) may be deviating from the main ideals of Islam by trying to be inclusive etc. I feel like getting a tree, putting gifts under it, takes it a bit far - again, my opinion. May Allah guide us all and forgive us for any major sins we are committing through any form of participation.

Comment author have Muslim family members but he/she isn't a Muslim based on the above comment. We consider Isa AS as one of the Prophets of Allah swt so it's quite obvious if you wish Christmas to Muslims they will not like it. I know you're quite a genius in the field of theology but I had to clarify here Christmas simply means mass gathering on the birth of Christ. So what's the big deal you may ask?? Who is a part of this mass Muslims, Jews, Hindus or Buddhist? The answer is simple again the Christians who called Isa AS as the son of God to which the Muslims objects! Don't twist scriptures and put forward your illogical thoughts/comments. Have any doubts? Don't be a stupid and keep posting here instead go back to the scriptures and look for answers. Hope you get well soon. may Allah swt give you hidayah... Ameen

My family is Christian and I grew up Christian so the Christmas holiday is something I enjoy because I’ve always done it. I’m obviously no longer Christian but it’s still fun when I get to celebrate and spend family time and all that.

That's really sad to hear but hopefully you've found a nice community of like-minded Muslims around you. And don't be put off by the fatwa brigade, they'd sooner have you living in a spiritual & emotional prison than see you be a human & Muslim at the same time. My wife's family are all like that and I tell you, they are a bunch of miserable gits that are in perpetual mourning.

Personally, I don’t care much for it in terms of decorations, Christmas trees, gifts etc for myself. I grew up in Pakistan so maybe the FOB in me is not as inclined. That said, I send donations to the Christian community in Pakistan, as I always used to back when I was living there. And this year, I plan to participate in a food and gifts donation drive for the homeless in the city I live in.

Do you donate to an organization? If so, mind sharing the name?

To those who celebrate, what makes you do so? Is it the idea of being left out? I really can't make out why any Muslim who says la ilaha illa Allah and knows what it means decide to celebrate "the birth of God". Where do you draw the line that says you are Muslim vs another religion?

like

Sure, why cant we say Merry Christmas. I think its okay to for us to believe there is only Allah. They believe there is only God. The Jews do the same. Doesn't mean we can't respect and live amongst each other. What am I missing?

But is putting up a tree and listening to the music really “celebrating” or just being festive? I would think going to the church for prayer is celebrating. And yes I’m a Muslim and my kids put up a fun tree and love the music. I let them but they know Eid and are learning namaaz too

likeupliftingfunny

Funny you say that, because to me it has a deeper meaning. We assume that just because people do not follow our religion, they do not have a right to be happy, because if we didn't then we would rejoice in their happiness and share each others celebrations much like we do when a child is born or a wedding anniversary. What is about a supposed religious festival that makes us pull our thobes above our ankles and run in the opposite direction?

Those of you who are criticising people that participate in Xmas, go and see how the different religious groups in countries like Egypt, Lebanon & Palestine celebrate each others holidays. Somehow we arrived in the West and forgot how moderate and open minded our forefathers were in our native lands. I'm Pakistani and I remember very openly from my grandparents how they had Sikh & Hindu best friends in their villages pre-partition and how they lived like brothers, sharing the happiness & sorrows of life together.

As a 1st generation Arab Muslim, I don’t celebrate Christmas. I’m that guy that doesn’t let his kids watch Christmas movies either 🤷‍♂️ I also hate Christmas songs & music… thank god for Spotify :) That being said, I wish my Christian friends “Merry Christmas” etc… Just because I don’t celebrate doesn’t mean I shouldn’t acknowledge their holidays and be a grumpy person.

I am not inclined to celebrate Christmas, but those that follow Christianity have been quite welcoming to Islamic holidays. There was a Christian community center by me that hosted an event for Ramadan. It is due to the above reason that, even though I don't explicitly celebrate Christmas...I do it sometimes to be appreciative of the Christian community.

I feel like Halloween gets more leniency with kids dressing up and trick treating opposed to Christmas. I grew up never going trick treating in which I do feel like I missed out as all my Muslim friends would go, but apart of me is glad. Would love to hear your take SE

We have a tree for Eid and decorate it. We also put gifts around the tree. We unpack gifts as a family after Eid prayers. Come at me!

A1, I must say the crescent tree is a bit cringe. I don't get why we need to distort other people's traditions to somehow put some sort of Islamic twist on them. We wouldnt like it if someone suddenly started doing a Pork Qurbani to celebrate Eid ul Adha with us. For me you're in or out and you should have the conviction either way to raise your kids with them getting a balanced few of the environment and cultural surrounding and not have to create artificial 'islamic' interpretations of everything.
