Curious, has anyone left their toxic firm in a blaze of glory and informed HR the real reasons they were leaving? I am one foot out the door with my firm and I already know I will be labeled as problematic because everyone that has left has been labeled the same way. Firm can’t retain attorneys and has very high turnover rate. In the end I will likely bite my tongue and only discuss salary reasons because my legal market is small. Hoping to live vicariously through one of you brave souls.

When I left a firm with only a handful of attorneys previously it was a mutual decision on my part and theirs because we agreed the firm and I had different goals and tolerance levels for certain things.

I was very open about what the issues were because I actually wanted the changes made so I could feel comfortable there again and stay. The firm declined to make the changes and so we agreed to go our separate ways.

The firm has made some of the changes since then. So, there is the possibility that you can make a difference, but you may also be labeled a troublemaker or boat rocker.

That seems reasonable. The more I think about it, the less it makes sense for me to say anything. The firm is never going to change. The partners have favorites and the favorites can do no wrong. Even if they do, partners turn a blind eye to problematic behavior.

Medium-sized firm. Rumor has it the same issues had been unresolved for years before I got there. When I left after 5 years, I let it all out to HR and to a couple of trusted partners. It probably wouldn’t have made too much of a difference, but then 4 other associates followed me out over the next 60 days. From the friends I have that are still there, the firm is *attempting* to make some changes.. We’ll see, but I’m glad I said something.

We got lawyers abusing alcohol and drugs. We got lawyers committing suicide. People need to start saying something. The only ones who benefit are partners. Their associates live in misery while they just keep increasing their profits. All these law firms need a wake up call. Be brave. Be the person who contributes to improving the profession. Not leave your fellow associates festering in the darkeness.

Friend of mine burned bridges on the way out via honesty. Spoiler alert: firm didn’t care, nothing changed.

I was tactfully honest when leaving my last firm - in a much nicer way I said that few partners were toxic and made it hard for me to justify suffering for the money - I wanted to see if they would make it better for my colleague associates who I really like and respect. Anyway, yeah, nothing changed. With some people it’s just their way or the highway and they consider associate turnover a cost of doing business.

like

I was very candid and laid it all out in an effort to help friends and colleagues I left behind. They did absolutely nothing with it and just told the partners I had significant complaints. Just remember HR work for the partnership.

likesmart

Well if it eventually ends up in litigation, it’d not be good for the company that they were warned and did nothing. That’s pretty much all you can do for your former colleagues.

I seriously considered being very honest in my exit interview since there had been a string of resignations and we were basically all leaving for the same underlying reason, but the firm never scheduled my exit interview. 🤔🤷‍♀️

likefunny

No but I wish I had. I stayed friends with coworkers who stayed and it only got worse for them and I felt bad not taking the opportunity to be honest.

He’s very personable and I could see why someone who deals with him in small doses would be charmed. He also has had a number of great associates over the years doing really good work for him that he has been able to take credit for. I don’t think anyone at the firm knows how little input he has in the cases.

like

Do not do this. Just say thanks for the opportunity, but I’ve found a better fit.

Why do you care if a firm you no longer work for “gets better”? Seriously, evaluate your motivations here. You want to get something off your chest use a friend or a therapist. Leave on decent terms and never look back.

My view is a firm culture is only likely to change due to internal changes in leadership. I think it is a nice sentiment to try and make it better for those you are leaving behind. But in reality, the firm is unlikely to take exit interview comments and impart real changes in culture based on that. My recommendation is to leave quietly and swiftly. You never know how your relationship with the firm attorneys will be in the future and there’s no reason to burn bridges if you already have an exit path.

I had an honest conversation with Partner A about Partner B. Explained that it was a hostile work environment, that other associates noticed the toxic treatment, & my mental health couldn’t continue this way. Partner A’s response was that Partner B needed someone to take his frustrations out on, & unfortunately that person had to be me. I said unfortunately that’s not going to work for me & I quit. Somehow there isn’t any bad blood & I do talk to them every so often.

like

Yes. I left because one partner I worked with a lot was a micromanaging crazy person who treated me like shit. I was candid in my exit interview and said I was leaving because of her, and I brought up many specific incidents and explained how those incidents were stifling my professional development.

Felt great. Still do.

Could swear you work at my job! Lol similar situations and it has been almost identical to what you’re saying. Anyone who left (unless retired) has been the one at fault regardless of the reason. I think it really depends on the group you work with. Are they willing to receive honest feedback? Or have you noticed that their behavior hasn’t changed when the other people left? Does HR recognize the culture or are they blinded as well?

If it’s truly a small legal market, I wouldn’t do this. People talk.

When I left my toxic firm to go in house, I threatened to report them to state labor department for unpaid wages (owed me $20k). I ended up getting into a nasty text back and forth with my managing partner, whom I formerly considered a good friend. She threatened to try and tank my reputation at my new employer, and I told her she should be embarrassed by her actions and the way she runs her business. Just recently, I went to change jobs and needed a professional reference — had to cross her off the list. Moral of the story is always take the high road when leaving a job.

like

It was a bit more complicated than that — ultimately I wound up with neither. The firm didn’t have the money to pay me (they went out of business not long after) and I lost the relationship. Ultimately, my point is that it was unwise to get into an ugly text war with an old boss, no matter what.

I was tempted but bit my tongue. Everyone knows my old firm is toxic af, and telling HR as much won’t change anything. The firm’s chairman even tried to address their reputation issues recently in some Bloomberg interview, but failed in a way only someone who is laughably out of touch could.

like

My firm has a serious sexual harassment issue. I think it’s just the NY office, but multiple (talented) associates have left because of it and even told HR that was the reason. I want to bring it up in my exit interview too, but I don’t think it’ll do anything.

Excited to be switching from ID to PI. Got a good vibe from the partners and spoke with a current associate who said good things. Then I talked to a colleague who said they’ve heard bad things about the firm. Took the wind right out of my sails. But then I thought any firm will have people saying good and bad things about it, and I’d argue that most gossip about firms, especially second hand, is generally negative. So I’m undeterred and still looking forward to my new position.
