Curious how firms recruit at the partner level

I think they basically know who they want and woo them with promises and $$

like

They have the person meet with a lot of folks, but the bargaining power seems to be more on the side of the target hire- they usually have some secret sauce the firm wants

like

It's really not much different than how firms recruit for lateral associates, except with partner hires, they're mostly concerned with how much portable business you have, who you want to bring with them (and what deals they're wanting for those people), etc.

I am routinely bombarded with recruiters pestering me about making a lateral move. Even worse than it was when I was an associate.

like

I’ve moved twice as a partner, once 8 head out of law school and the second time 20 years out. The first time I was recruited by two longtime friends because the firm needed someone who did what I did and had the experience I had. The pitch was a bigger platform and greater resources to cross sell. I also got a decent pay bump but was more sold by the greater opportunity. The second time I got a call from a recruiter in the immediate aftermath of a large merger, when my firm was unsettled and had leadership that was widely viewed as dangerous. The pitch on behalf of the firm I ultimately chose was mostly cultural but also focused on my specific skill set and experience. If I didn’t tell you what you really want to know please ask a follow up or private message me. It’s an interesting and important issue vis a vis firm culture and growth and lateral hiring has many surprising implications.

uplifting

I would think the primary focus is the book of business and then everything else.

like

I don’t know if that’s the norm.

A portable book of business is primarily the standard.

Either that, or coming in as an income partner in a package deal with a equity partner to be who has a large book.

Hi everyone! Just looking for some insight. I’m about 4 years into HR, have my bachelors. I’ve been toying around with the idea of getting my masters in something relating to compliance/labor law and that side of HR. Shrm certification is also on my list. If anyone has some advice on what to get a masters in specifically, I’d be open to suggestions! I’m trying to find something that would be worth my while and would give me a step up. Thanks!

Curious about first year comp for partners in single equity tier firms. Would be interesting to get some input from folks who have a sense of what that looks like based on what they’ve seen at their own firms. At my firm, it’s around 600 with bonuses for billings and originations, and steps up pretty quickly. If you know how it works at your firm, please post so we can get a sense of what the market looks like.

I am seeking advice on my first job as a lawyer out of law school. Fortunately, I received offers for an in-house position and with a law firm in their corporate department. The salary for the in-house position is $110k and $170k for the position at the firm. I have 2 questions.
(1) is it detrimental to my legal career if I go in house first; I hear there is no better training than firms. (2) how long can I wait until I respond to my offer from the law firm? Thank you!

I’m currently working at a law firm in San Diego specializing in coastal property rights as a litigation paralegal and legal assistant. We received a minute order from a preliminary injunction hearing. Our client was ordered to post an injunction bond of $2,500. First our client walked to the courthouse to try to pay the bond up front, but they would not accept his money. He tried to call several bond companies, but all said the amount was too small. So how do you post an injunction bond?

I’ve been practicing for 4 years, but new to the immigration practice. I recently submitted an I-129 for 15 H-2B landscape workers. We have this associate who is former army special forces. He’s an okay lawyer, looks like a biker with a beard and a sleeve tattoo, but all the partners freaking love him. They’re constantly asking him about the army or he’ll have a bunch of them around him telling them about some nuts military training thing or kicking down doors in Afghanistan. I can’t handle it. The rest of us are totally invisible. Do I just need to get over it?
