I know quite a few people that have done it successfully. If you’re efficient and can juggle multiple projects at once, you can make more money than you would at a partner firm.
The trade off is the lack of stability, no benefits, etc. as well as more limited options for career growth. As an IC you are ultimately limited by your own productivity so at a certain point your earning potential will cap out. I have friends that went independent and have started building their own consulting firms, which may work out well for them but it’s certainly more of a risk.
So honestly, what do you gain being a certified consultant?
If you go independent, then you can make more money. You can buy I insurance and put more money aside.
No harm in going independent. If the technology changes, you change with it.
If you go contracting for a partner firm you can technically renew your certs as part of the standard process - I’ve seen many connections do this in the past. E.g go contracting to customers for 9 months then join a partner firm to renew. Then repeat
