Curious if anyone has successfully interviewed with another public accounting firm without a full on suit. Might have to bite the bullet and buy another suit jacket that fits 😂

As a manager who interviews many of the applicants to our office, go get the suit. If it is less formal, you shrug and say you never know and some accountants are particular about formality. If you skip the jacket, those same people will ignore your actual skills. I agree it’s dumb but humans are odd creatures.

like

I find the formality silly. I wear jeans most days and rarely dress up more than a nice top, even at a clients’. My industry is very informal though. The only very formally dressed people now are the interns. They show up in a suit some days no matter what we tell them.

Literally just wore slacks and a polo

Definitely have considered just wearing my usual in-office attire

You guys are doing in person interviews? Every single person I have interviewed since 2020 has been over teams. Meaning suit coat on top and shorts.

like

First round is remote but it helps make sure they have transportation and don’t whine about in person work. Some clients want to see you, some don’t. It helps get a better judge on the person too. Specifically so we never accidentally hire another Tom who smelled of 3 day old roadkill and caused 5 people to quit.

like

If you’re an experienced hire, just wear something on the top end of business casual. I wouldn’t do jeans etc but I think a full suit screams new grad who doesn’t know how the office works yet. Plus a lot of people who aren’t used to suits end up fidgeting or looking uncomfortable which can make them seem kind of awkward.

like

This is kind of where my head was leaning towards as well. While yes appearance matters to an extent, what’s more important is the actual conversation (imo)

like

Look up on YouTube how to remove tags so you can put them back on and return later. ;) but wear the suit, shows respect imo and that you take this seriously

Anyone ever have any issues with a boss who constantly over shares? Specifically talks about their spouse/religion too much? I have a new Director who I would like to give a fair chance but they share way too many details of their personal life where it’s hard for me to be able to respect them. Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated!

I’m a 1styear, and there’s one other junior associate of color in my group.
The partner I work for keeps calling me her name. For ex: my name is “Sara” and her name is “Jasmine”. Names not similar, we don’t look alike - but I suppose we are about the same complexion. I can’t help but think it’s because we’re the only two black juniors. I was granting her grace because my mom accidentally calls me my sisters name and stuff, I get that it happens. But now it’s becoming a microagression. Advice?

Are you responsible for giving performance feedback? Avoid giving personality based feedback. Examples include telling an Asian person they are too quiet/shy or telling a Black person they are agressive/abrasive. DO NOT DO THIS. It clearly represents bias in Performance Management. Performance feedback should be tied to business outcomes with clear examples of what the person does well + how they can improve.

I’m at a new agency and there are a couple of things about the culture I’m really struggling with. 1) Nobody has cameras on. Ever. I understand not having them on occasionally. But this is the norm1 large and small meetings. 2) No small talk. I understand we are all busy but there’s absolutely no “how was your weekend” discussion. What can I do about this? I’ve been at two agencies and never experienced this. I know I can’t ask people to turn on cameras but I try and set an example myself.

Our Digital marketing team is very small: Myself and the Digital Manager. I’m starting to feel that my manager is handing off projects that should be his responsibility and are projects that he doesn’t want/know how to do. Most are very analytical/reporting base, and frankly I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen him complete a reporting deck for the year that we’ve worked together. I’m starting to wonder what he even works on as he has enough time to have many hallway chats throughout the day.

Has anyone experienced sexual assault without reporting and come out in the other side? Had a horrific experience with a partner at my last employer and didn’t handle it in the best way - and tbh think it’s impacting my daily life more than I care to admit.
