Curious to know your thought on this virus and how its been lethal mostly for individuals with underlying health issues tied to heart disease and obesity. Which according to CDC is largely driven by diet which leads me to think alot about the food industry and being an informed consumer. Is it absurd to make these connections? What are your thoughts on the food industry including GMO, Veganism, Organic, Cost and Availability. And the overall affects on health and ability to fight viruses.

Yes, eating healthy makes you healthy. To prevent against covid 19 and most any other health issues. But no, GMO and Organic don’t mean much. For eggs, I get ones sourced from a local farm to know that they’re not factory farmed, for example. A balanced diet, like Mediterranean, is better than veganism, health-wise. I’d also recommend reading Blue Zones.

I think thats a great point you bring up. Even as a Vegan I do realize that I may be deprived of certain nutrients which is why I try to be consistent which checkups and maintain my nutrients levels. But the crazy thing is, all these diets have its flaws even as a Vegan. And local farmers markets are definitely the best if you have access

Try the Asian diet 😍 China doesn't count because it was the first country with covid but the rest of the Asian countries do really well health wise and the % of Asian Americans who died from covid is marginally low. Cut down on dairy, junk food, eat grains + decent amount of meat + vegetables every day

I am an Indian and I think I can consider myself as asian too. Yes we eat white rice and my PCP observe that since we eat only rice and no other sugar conc product we don’t get diabetes till later ages which maybe becoz of less activity. In US - all foods have sugar/corn syrup. Corn syrup is every where - be it frozen foods, be it any food..

I think poor nutrition is commonly a byproduct of low income. I don’t think it’s a solvable problem on a global level anytime soon, because I don’t think you can eradicate poverty without eradicating extreme wealth. So, idk, what the answer is.

like

Yep, big issue. Impoverished people have less time to cook, they can’t afford fancy meal plans / restaurant food (fast food only), they are less likely to be informed about nutrition, and they tend to be lower skilled in the kitchen (lack of time, lack of equipment/tools, etc) Also, I think it’s plausible that lower income folks consume junk food as an affordable source of pleasure/fun, since other sources tend to be expensive (and junk food goes hand-in-hand with other low cost leisure activities such as video games and Netflix)

eat good body good. eat bad body bad

Can be mitigated by buying from biodiverse farms that don’t destroy the soil. Downside is effort in finding the right stuff (usually not even in expensive grocers like Whole Foods) and price

Being an informed consumer is nice if you can afford it. Most people don’t have that luxury unfortunately.

like

I second what most have said. I am Vegan and mostly shop at Whole Foods and Wegmans which would be considered pretty expensive. However, I actually spend less than I did when I wasn’t Vegan and I am more informed about what I eat and read labels more. The reality is, there are people who cannot even afford that due to extreme poverty. But funny enough alot of the people who say they can’t afford it aren’t at the poverty level even. They are willing to buy extra alcohol and luxury clothing and shoes and lots of money on hair and technology but not on food that improves their health.

like

A big thing I’ve been thinking about is how eating nutritious is quite expensive. Beef from grass fed anti biotic free cows, eggs from non-factory farmed free range chickens, fresh in-season vegetables from small farms that practice healthy bio-diverse farming methods. It adds up. I use a local meat and farm share for 90% of my food and staying healthy and purchasing local is certainly a privilege and I’m not comfortable with that.

likesmartfunny

I’ve been practicing utilizing cheaper cuts of (high-quality, pasture raised) meat for stews / roasts. A bunch of onions and carrots with a bone-in cheap cut is a ton of healthy food for less $$

I hope to get around to read this. How had it impacted the way you eat now? If you don’t mind sharing

Ya but why do you think COVID kills more black people / minorities... cause they’re categorically lower income and less access to top education....if there’s any education efforts may be better spent in better American education fundamental/school funding in poor urban areas vs being an informed consumer, which is also important but something more white collar on the hierarchy of concerns

like

Hmm that’s an interesting point. I certainly understand where you are coming from as far as the hierarchy of concerns coming from a single family household of 6 sharing a one bedroom apartment and a mother who struggled to make ends meat. But I wonder if you health should be at the bottom if concerns. I would think it would be number one for anyone and not a white-collar concern. What good is an American education if you or your family can’t live long enough to benefit from it?

So happy to see someone talking about this. It’s all about doing these things up front (exercise, eating well, vitamins/minerals, sun shine). Our society is so reactive and dependent on prescription drugs. If organic/free range foods can fit in your budget, def go for these options.

like

Yes I think that is the mindset I have. Try to feed your body with the right food and give yourself a better chance of fighting illness and living a healthy life. The interesting thing is, we buy cheap food now, only to make us sick and weak later in life and then we are in the hands of the healthcare system and pharmaceutical companies to keep us alive which actually costs us way more in medication and surgeries than a few extra cents/dollars for better food

Appreciate all the various insights. How much impact do you all think we could have on driving down the price of healthy food if demand for unhealthy choices decreased at a significant level. Forcing corporations to compete in the healthy food category and thus driving down prices. Im no economist but do wonder what impact that could make

The problem is more that the advice has been wrong and conflicting. Our nutrition guidelines have been set by nutritional epidemiologists, and they are awfully wrong. I explained above — epidemiology is a useful tool for infectious diseases, where there are massive effects from exposure and where outcomes manifest in days, not years. Nutrition must be based on biochemistry, pathophysiology, anthropology, etc. — what is happening at a cellular, tissue, and chemical level? Not just weak statistical observations that are proven false when tested experimentally (e.g., see Minnesota Coronary Experiment on saturated fats and cardiovascular disease — replacing saturated fats with polyunsaturated significantly *increased* mortality, while not affecting cardiovascular disease) Of course to the nutritional epidemiologist, epidemiology is the only and best tool. If you have a hammer... everything looks like a nail Americans have largely followed the guidelines, and they do not work (see below) Lastly, many healthy foods are not expensive. Eggs, chicken breast, and ground beef are $3-5 per meal. But also not very profitable for food companies because you can’t differentiate a chicken breast as well as you can a Cool Ranch Dorito

I have offers with Bain (Sr mgr) and BCG (PL2), and will be focusing on their PE practices. I know Bain is the leader in PE work, but having trouble deciding which offer to go for. My conflict right now is I had better interactions with BCG interviewers and initially leaned that way, but the infrastructure & market presence of Bain in this space is strong. Thoughts?
