I took off 4 months between two jobs (internship and first full time position) and noted in my application that I used the time to prepare for my GMAT and to travel. It didn’t hurt my application and I was never asked to justify it.
On a different note however, I am not sure now is the time to quit a safe employment. Can you take a leave instead?
I’m doing this exact thing right now, and it has been a GREAT decision for me. I quit GLG in late July and am 1 mo into studying for GMAT full time. Taking the test on sept 24th, then planning on taking it again 2-3 weeks later. After I finish that will split my time between apps/essays and job hunting. I plan on noting in my essay the reason I quit was that my job (and the promotion I turned down) didn’t align with my career goals, which is why I need an MBA (to reach those goals)
come to the dark side!!!! :):):)
PS I do want to clarify that I’m privileged in the sense my parents have allowed me to move back in with them for the time being. So worrying about food/shelter right now is not an issue; not sure if you would have the same situation. I quit with the understanding that it may be up to 6 months before I find employment again, although places are hiring if you aren’t too picky

Sure, but I wouldn’t explain that you took off time to study for gmat. There are people in IB who work terrible hours and can find time to study for gmat. It makes you look like you can’t multitask.

I think it’s okay to take a gap between when you graduate college and start work (that’s normal). But any other gap between jobs you will have to explain in optional essay. And as stated above “study for GMAT” will not suffice.
I was laid off, so don’t have to make up an excuse, but you shouldn’t say you’re leaving just to study for GMAT. I like what GLG said about job not aligning with career goals.
Thank you everyone! Yeah i was not planning to talk about studying for GMAT in the essay. I am, however, trying to do an industry and career switch so i will definitely mention that.
