Curious what an attorney’s billable amount looked like in 2012 and then ten years later in 2022. Any takers?

Don't feel like doing math right now, but the average inflation rate for legal services has been just under 4%/year, so make of that what you will.

2012 is when I started practicing in my first law firm and I don't think the billable hours have especially changed. To be fair, I do plaintiff's personal injury so we don't have billables but from other job offers and friends they seem to be the same about 2000 is kind of the standard benchmark plus or minus

Ohh! That's a good increase, A1. Where are you based?

I want convert every lead I can. Does anyone have tips, books, cle’s or studied this topic?

So I just accidentally found out that the senior associate in our office makes almost 3x the amount I do per month. For background, we have 4 attorneys, the senior associate has about 9 years more experience than I do (I have 6). This person should be paid more than me, I have no problem with that. Is it normal for there to be that big of a difference in pay? I just want to know if I’m getting screwed.

For those who are more of a general practice (solo/small firm) - how do you know what type of cases you’ll enjoy doing and actually know what needs to be done? How do you juggle cases that you aren’t too familiar with or that you don’t know much about the area of law? Do you just wing it? Look to mentors for help?

For those who started their firm after practicing in biglaw and compete with biglaw, how do your rates compare to what you would be charging in biglaw? Right now I’m charging approximately half (~$500) of what I’d normally be billed out as a senior associate/junior partner (~$1000) and have more work than I can manage, but I’m hesitant in raising my rates too much b/c I don’t want it to adversely affect my client relationships or our ability to generate new business. Thoughts?

I work at a small, 3 lawyer firm. One of the lawyers is not barred in the state we practice. Because of this, the managing attorney has been having him draft motions and other legal documents and use my name and bar number and having me file them because I will have to appear in court for the matter. Is this normal? I am not provided time to review the materials before I file them so I end up working longer days because I am nervous to file something using my name and bar number.
