Almost the end of my first year starting my own firm. Financially we did incredible, personally I’m exhausted. I’m tired, I don’t want to work for anyone else, but this is alot. I’m constantly hustling for business, constantly getting rejected and excited for the wins when business does come in. I’m just tired.

Anyone have a company or person who created their firm's conflict check procedures? Is that even a thing? I'm just feeling overwhelmed with figuring out how I'm going to keep track of it, especially as I grow. With so many things to keep track of as a solo I feel like this is one I would rather delegate.

I want to hire a contract attorney to assist in my family law practice area. Do you have experience with hiring contract attorneys? How did that work out? How did you pay them?

I am 38 and recently relocated to Charlotte, NC. For solo and small law firm owners, I am curious, if you care to share anonymously, when you opened your firm and what kind of revenue you are running this year? I want to just get an idea of what is average or common.

First gen lawyer here (not that that really impacts the question/post) but I see all these posts about entering billable time and appropriate descriptions (mostly in big law or other practice areas (Domestic Relations litigation here)). How often do people here run into clients requesting meetings to have their bills explained or refusing to pay certain work? What’s your practice area, and who in your firm is tasked with these explanation meetings?

I am evaluating an opportunity to join a small firm (4 attorneys plus staff) as an associate but not on salary. Rather, I’d keep a portion of the firm’s collections on matters I work on, and I can choose my rate for my own clients (and would give a portion of those collections back to the firm). Sounds like in time I’d be able to participate in profit sharing program. Curious if others have worked in a similar situation and what pointers you have.

Finishing up my first year of big law, thinking of starting my own practice while I work at my current position. Thinking that in a few months, I’ll concretely work solely for my own practice full-time. How difficult is it to gain clients (mainly PI and civil lit)? My mentor also offered me to be an off counsel while I’m working at my current job so that I can refer cases for a cut, would there be an ethical issue? FYI my firm does unrelated law to PI and doesn’t forbid doing extra work.

How normal is it to be pulled off a trial team because you tell your boss you are moving after trial? I have a trial coming up first week of Oct. This case has been my baby, and I’m going to try it with my boss. I tell my boss up front that, for family reasons, I’ve gotten a new job and will be moving to another city two weeks after trial will likely end. He then gives my trial witnesses to another attorney, but is still going to make me do grunt work. Is he unreasonable or am I?

What would you consider a “good profit” for first year solo?

I’ve been at a small law firm for a year and eight months, and have been an attorney for one year. By small I mean, it’s me and another attorney (I’m the paralegal and law clerk as well). I don’t plan on sticking around, and am actively seeking new employment. Should I ask for a raise even though a raise wouldn’t make me stay? I’m in the San Diego area, I get paid $37 an hour, no benefits, but I get to work from home two days (I commute 104 miles total when I go into the office).

I tested the waters (currently at $105 base)and got offered a position making $125k base +10% comm up to $500k in atty fees that goes to 15% after half a mil in fees. The work is in first party plaintiff (same field im in now). My boss is desperate. He offered to up my base from 105 to 150 and up my EOY bonus to 10k. 200k base salary guaranteed next year in writing if I stay & named partner. some equity the year after.l if I stay. I am a first-year attorney in a 3 person firm (I’m the third). My bosses put me on the PD appointment list to ensure I have work but I absolutely dread court appearances and litigation.
