Always find ways to do the work you want to do, even if it's personal time or firm initiatives. People get pigeonholed in LD the same way they get pigeonholed into admin/secretarial work. If it's not what you want to do, then keep pushing until you get where you want.
And don't let people who are doing what they want to do try to keep you where it's convenient for them.
Good luck ❤
C1 - "don't let people who are doing what they want to do try to keep you where it's convenient for them" ... That is brilliant! Thank you.
Unless you deeply love L&D and talent development, you should push for other work. At some point it gets really hard to migrate out of that space and into other areas. I've been in L&D 20+ years and still I wake up with it as my passion, but I have seen and coached so many people who feel stuck in this work. The world sees them as L&D, and they have trouble moving into roles, other industries, and even different HR spaces. However, there's a lot of really great opportunities that spending time in learning and talent development can give you- leadership skills and the theory behind it, workforce development, learning tech, change management and people analytics. It's really up to you to drive the change, connect your past work to what you want to be doing. And if you aren't getting it in your current role or the opportunity isn't there, you may want to evaluate other options.
