Y’all need a Men’s Equality subboard for this whiny shit. “It’s a women’s world now”...at first I laughed and then I pitied that typo.

I'm at an agency where 6 of our 9 top executives are women, 57% of the VP and above level staff are female, and the agency as a whole is 68% female. I know this because my agency published a newsletter today, because tomorrow is international women's day, telling us how we all need to strive for more gender equality in the workplace... .... It's almost like they didn't read their own statistics.

We should be talking about inclusion and equality for POC, not white women. White women are kinda ruining advertising.

like

^So let's fix inequality with a different flavor of inequality? I'm sure that won't be at all divisive.

It’s a women’s world now. I had the same position and a better portfolio than this girl at my workplace. Two years later, she is CD. I’m still a senior. BONUS: my portfolio is still better, with more awards than hers.

Good question, tough for me to say as I mostly have reported into women and they make better bosses, so I don't know what went wrong with the previous generation. Client services has a better balance than other areas, but encouraging more young women into creative and tech education will help. Unfortunately, to do it fairly will just take time, the other option is to promote people early or create new board positions. Superficial stuff that's not great for the agency. Also, the current gender equality drive has really pushed diversity to the back burner. It's still about getting middle class white people into leadership positions.

like

@OP not slavery but certainly reparations. Yes we are not our parents generation, but white people still benefit from the effects of slavery and Jim Crow. That's why we have things like affirmative action. The world is moving in the right direction but again, we can't be equal until we even the playing field, and that means taking into account the past and how that benefits certain people now, including and especially white men. Sorry that makes you feel like you have less of a chance. Maybe instead of focusing on yourself, focus on giving women and POC a leg up, and then, when things are equal, we can talk about equal opportunity for everyone. For now, to make things equal, women and POC need more opportunities than white men. Period.

Hahaha y’all mad. 😂 trust, the mediocrity in the workforce Is likely to decrease from this new shift. Women/People of Color being promoted “all of a sudden” isn’t all of the sudden. They’ve been putting in the work and have been ignored/overlooked.

Lame. Should be 50-50 if they want to push for equality

like

agencies hiring minority and female talent is a good and necessary thing. doing so for PR purposes (see: Havas Chi’s “hey black people, we want to hire you! stunt) is cringeworthy. that’s one example, but making social posts about it and all that stuff doesn’t read as inclusive, it comes off as hey, we’re gonna ride this trend too, but not actually seek or learn a mindset of evergreen equality.

@OP encouraging women to go into creative hasn't worked. At the junior level, we've been 50/50 for almost twenty years. That's not at all the problem. And honestly why can't women run things for a while and get hired solely for their gender a bit? Men did it for decades, we should get a couple decades too. That would be actual equality. Because until we're benefiting from decades of being on top, we'll never be equal, since you guys all already have a leg up.

I’d hate to be a man trying to get promoted to senior leadership right now. I feel like everyone I’ve seen recently elevated were women and people of color. That’s good but I do wonder if all of them deserve it and we aren’t passing on some really talented people who happen to be men or white or both

but i wouldn’t expect anything less from my clueless white brethren.

It's tough - and particularly so in WPP agencies. Senior roles are being openly briefed to recruiters as female only hires. Leadership training is near impossible to get on as a man. In fact I was waiting in line for 2 years for access to a previous agency's leadership training and when my time came, the MD sat me down and said that he was instructed by WPP to only send women on this training and that he had prioritised a mid-level producer over me - the account lead of their largest account. I handed my notice in the next day. They have since lost the client.

PM1, “women’s world” is a huge stretch but it as a fact that men are competing for fewer positions now. Nothing wrong with that tho.

like

There's was a push and celebration when we had strong female leadership represention, which was great. One year later, we can't make that claim anymore. Not so great.

@CA1, well that's not going to work so. Try again.

To clarify, I know someone who puts African in race and always brags about how they benefited from affirmative action in college and it's landed them a ton of offers because of every company's push to be more diverse. Only thing is he's egyptian rather than black so I'm not sure how that's viewed from a diversity hiring perspective.

My job let’s me choose between NYC and SF. I’m a young guy - from a dating perspective is one better than the other? I know people talk about the gender inequity in SF but my sense is during the pandemic a lot of guys have moved out of the Bay Area to cities like NYC, LA etc.

Kind of aggravated with the example male leadership is setting right now with regard to parenting at CV. At least 5 men in leadership have had new babies in the last month and it seems like some have taken no time off or only the bare minimum. We have 12 weeks and should be encouraged to use it! If leadership isn’t taking advantage of their own policy, what does that say to the rest of the staff? In my perspective, this is likely further contributing to the gender disparity in CV leadership
