Stay in close communication with your partners. Right now, a lot of senior associates don’t have anything to push down, so it might all come from your partners. If there’s no billable work, ask how else you can help or learn. Shadowing opportunities, client alerts, marketing projects, relevant CLE’s....there’s quite a bit of “busy work” out there that will at least show you’re making an effort.

Good luck! It’s a tough time for all of us right now.

You seem to have a connection with at least some people who are able to give you inside picture as far as hours. If you feel safe asking, I would ask them to be brutally honest with you about hours. If they’re running at 80% of normal, you’ll be fine. But some people are secretly running closer to 50% or less during covid and freaking out every day about getting fired (and because attorneys are crazy and competitive about hours, a lot of people will try really hard not to let their peers know that they’re desperate for work until the axe comes down).

Should I be worried? 5th year restructuring associate at a large nyc firm. Market seems completely dead. Q4 20 was my busiest time ever. Now, have never been slower. I’m talking 20 hours/mo slow. Have gotten two calls from partners telling me not to worry and that they think highly of me. At the same time, one let it slip that senior management is discussing how to deal with the situation (i.e. our group being dead slow with no change in sight). Should I start looking for another job?

Healthy design discussions with developers vs. open season on the designers. Last month with one dev team it felt like open season, they argued with most of my decisions and the spirit seemed to be they wanted to design the app. Other teams I have worked with there was a lot of collaboration, what was technically feasible in the allotted time, or someone had solved a problem differently in another context. That to me is healthy discussion. Thoughts? Experiences?

How do you address/explain billable hour requirements to your significant other?
