Current firm is decent in terms of pay, practice area, hours, and advancement opportunities. Interviewing with a government agency—more interesting practice and a little bit of a pay cut. Yes or no?

Honestly, if I got this job and didn’t take it I would be kicking myself in a few years. So yes. I think I just answered my own question.

likefunny

Government work has its benefits. Ask about work schedule. Most state agencies require 37.5 hours a week. Better work life balance.

like

Deal. That’s like a part time job compared to the hours I work now (60+). This is a federal agency but I’m sure the requirements are similar.

Fat gingers. If you are a big fish in government, you can transition to big law in that field readily. Big fish is her high in the organization. Low on the food chain, not do much if you stay more than a year or two. At least that is what I saw in dc when there long ago.

like

Didn’t realize fat gingers were a concern here.

Working for the feds can be a lot of fun, get more responsibility quickly, and generally treated better, merit system protection board, and pay is ok with really good benefits. Can top out quickly and can be highly political and spicy driven, which can be bat shot crazy food, but not to the extent of a firm. Some firms make feds look efficient, and be prepared to work quickly and perhaps without as much detail as in private practice.

OP, what part of spicy driven bat shot crazy food did you not get? (Laughing as I type this.)

funny

Generally, how easy is it to transition back to big law after a stint at a federal agency?

Big law does not so much like fed experience, except if shirt and on point, or long and you are high up, in which case you may get a golden ticket when leaving orcretiring from public service.

I usually wear a shirt to work so I’m probably fine.

funny

If you are a very big fish wirkingv

Depends on whether 15 years from now, you want to be earning $ 500,000 plus per year or $125,000.

Money is not an issue.

Role is business development/client service associate and this would be my first full time role. I just want to have a general idea of what comp could/should be so I feel prepared to discuss
